Our high profile client in the automotive industry is currently looking to recruit a HMI Researcher to work at their busy site in Coventry.

**12 month rolling contract with the view to extend**
**Based at Warwick University**
**Up to £30 per hour umbrella co rate or PAYE option available**

Position Description:

- To research in the human factors of future vehicle systems, including developing and understanding Human Machine Interfaces for in vehicle use.
- To be involved in a number of different work streams focused on different features and technologies, and offering support from a human centered design perspective.
- To provide expertise on Human Factors and to take responsibility for completion of associated project deliverables and tasks, including experimental design, data collection and analysis.
- To work closely with the product development teams to ensure that research needs are met and carried out using appropriate methods and toolsets.
- This centres on developing an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the science of human behaviour in the vehicle, and using this knowledge to design future interface systems for the Clients’ products.
- This will include running scientific experiments to validate the basic principles of user interaction in the vehicle, and using the output of this work to define the operation principles of vehicle based user interfaces that take into account key principles taken from Psychology, Human Factors and cognitive science.
- Building up a naturalistic understanding of how users interact in cars and using this to create highly effective interface systems.
- Working within an automotive field requires consideration of the impact of in-vehicle systems on the driving task and hence designing systems that support a driver to carry out this task is the primary aim
Skills Required:

- Detailed knowledge of the human factors, and in particular the implications for Human Machine Interface design in the vehicle is essential
- A science focused, research mentality, and understanding of the research process.
- Understand the process of going from basic conceptual idea through a design / test / iterate loop before using data to define a solution
- Good project management skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team are required as well as the ability to produce clear technical documentation is also required.
Experience Required:

- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Human Computer Interaction, Product Design (with a focus on user interfaces), Psychology, Human Factors / Ergonomics, with a particular interest in fundamental research into in-vehicle interface systems
- Experience of carrying out user interface research and familiar with the science of human interaction in the vehicle and able to help interpret qualitative and quantative data to improve and iterate design solutions.
- Familiar with a human-centred design process
- Experience of delivering technical products as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal / communication skills, including ability to manage senior stakeholders and communicate at all levels
- Assimilate how to collect data to answer detailed research questions
- Have the ability to react quickly to short time scales
- Operate in an efficient and professional manner in a fast paced environment
- To present findings to a wide audience of mixed abilities, and be able to amending the content if the message is not received.
- Have good contacts, or be able to make good contacts in academia in this technical area and be able to guide the department on who the key experts are in industry or academia.
Experience Preferred:

- Experience of working in the automotive industry or similar within a research or advanced product development environment is desirable but not essential.
- Familiarity with premium automotive sector, products and features and technology used in the HMI area.
- Computer literate, enthusiastic, forward looking, lateral thinker with proven creative, research and innovation skills in the field of technology.
- Experience in the creation of any necessary virtual or physical demonstrators and organisation of any user studies required to select and/or validate proposals
- Advanced degree (Masters / PhD) in Human Computer Interaction, Product Design (with a focus on user interfaces), Psychology, Human Factors / Ergonomics
- Design experience in the automotive or consumer electronics industries
- Familiarity with Agile & Scrum methodologies
- Experience of building and managing multiple relationships in complex stakeholder environments
Additional Information:

- The role will be based at Warwick University with occasional travel to other Client sites (Whitley, Gaydon etc.).

**Job Type**: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months

**Salary**: Up to £30.00 per hour
