Barnardo’s are ambitious for children with disabilities and additional needs in Sutton and want to support all children to experience positive outcomes. The Short Breaks service provides group-based activities for children with disabilities and additional needs. Children are supported within nurturing relationships that promote children’s independence, wellbeing, strengths, and capabilities. Within safe and stimulating social environments, groups provide opportunities for children with disabilities and additional needs to interact with their peers and develop friendships. Activities are designed to support children to learn and develop skills that support their development towards adult life and independence. The service is also plays a vital role in providing families and carers respite from their caring responsibilities. This volunteer role supports groups delivered weekly (during term time) on Saturdays. Primary school aged children attend 10am to 1pm, Secondary school aged children attend 2pm to 5pm. An ‘All Girls Group’ for girls with autism also runs monthly. This is an exciting opportunity for volunteers to contribute to developing this service, its outcomes and impact. Within the groups, Volunteers will have the opportunity to play, develop children’s skills, support their independence, socialise with and talk to children. This service runs activities from various centres within Sutton or in the local communities, and trips. Activities may be skills led i.e. independence in the community, sports, creative arts, games and play, trips, or with visiting speakers. We are looking for volunteers who share our ambition for children, and who can provide a sense of dignity, respect and compassion for children with disabilities and additional needs. You will be child-led, person-centred and wellbeing focussed in your approach, and able to respond to changing needs, or adapt planned activities, to support the individual and particular needs of children. As consistency and reliability of relationships is key to this service’s impact and outcomes, we are looking for volunteers willing and able to commit to a group regularly. It is essential that you are able to follow safety and safeguarding procedures at all times, including risk assessments. All groups will have a Lead Project Worker and Project Workers, who will undertake any moving and handling, invasive care, or personal care duties - it is not an expectation of Volunteers to carry out these duties. Specific training will be provided for meeting particular care needs of children, as required. Full safeguarding training will be provided.

Our volunteers help make this happen.- Tasks: Supporting children and young people in both group settings and on an individual basis to achieve desired outcomes.
- Building positive relationships with children and young people.
- Assisting with group activities, which take into consideration age, abilities and interests of members.
- Setting up group activities in advance and clearing away afterwards. This might include preparing refreshments/snacks, organising the layout of the room, preparing resources and tidying the room after the group.
- Meeting with individual children and young people on a regular basis to provide additional support to assist them in working towards positive goals.
- Assisting children and young people to improve their self-confidence, develop social skills and build positive relationships.
- Encouraging children and young people to access resources, groups and activities within their local community, such as after school activities, youth groups, and sports clubs.
- Role modelling positive behaviour and interactions during group and one-to-one sessions.
- Supporting children to have their voices heard on decisions that affect them.
- Collating and evaluating feedback from children and young people.
- Adhering to Barnardo's policies and procedures at all times, including Barnardo's: Safeguarding; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; Health & Safety; Data Protection; Confidentiality; Recording policies and procedures.
