We maintain an internal surge capability of staff who may be called at short notice to support an activation of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE). Training and support will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity to develop crisis management skills.

**Job description**:

- The Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology (CST) provides advice to the Prime Minister and Cabinet on science and technology policy. Our members' advice helps government to understand, shape and use critical and emerging science and technology to boost the UK’s prosperity, wellbeing and security in an increasingly connected, complicated and competitive world. Recent work has included advice on maximising the economic impact of engineering biology, investment in innovative science and technology companies, and the UK as a science and technology superpower. The Secretariat and Projects team provides support to members to ensure CST advice is informed by the best available evidence and expertise and is relevant and timely to inform major decisions.
- This role is a great opportunity to work on high-profile, cross government priorities and offers a mix of policy, analysis, stakeholder engagement, and project delivery experience.-
**Person specification**:
- Carrying out targeted research, evidence synthesis, and analysis and communicating insights to CST members. This will include conducting literature reviews and desk research, identifying evidence gaps, and summarising and synthesising expert advice.
- Working closely with CST sub-group members and external experts to draft and finalise written advice.
- Ensuring the Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) and CST members are updated with relevant science and innovation policy, regulatory and political-related developments that impact the provision of advice.
- Leading engagement with key stakeholders across government and the research and innovation ecosystem to develop policy advice and ensure impact.
- Employing project management practices to regularly monitor progress, ensure the project meets its milestones, and to amend the project plan or priorities if necessary.
- Line management responsibility of HEO staff or interns.

**Essential criteria**
- Experience of working across teams to delivery key priorities.
- Experience of writing high-quality documents which demonstrate clarity of thought, sound logical reasoning and strong use of evidence.
- An understanding of the UK’s R&D and innovation landscape through experience of working on science, research, and/or innovation policy in government, academia, industry or elsewhere.
- Ability to quickly grasp a new and complex topics and communicate this understanding in a credible and persuasive way.
