**About Understanding Patient Data**

Understanding Patient Data (UPD) is an independent initiative that was established in 2016 and previously hosted by the Wellcome Trust to support better conversations about the uses of health information. Working with patients, charities, and healthcare professionals, UPD has built a reputation as a trusted source of advice and objective, engaging information about the use of patient data in the UK for care and research.

This role will deliver the transition of UPD as an independent initiative now hosted by the NHS Confederation, and supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council, the National Institute for Health and Care Research, the Department for Health and Social Care and NHS England.

**About the role**

This role will be hosted in the Policy and Engagement Directorate at NHS Confederation, and as Head of UPD, you will drive the work of UPD, and the organisation’s delivery. This will include:

- Leading the creation and development of UPD’s strategy, providing thought leadership, and generating buy-in from a range of partners.
- Leading, shaping and managing the delivery of a programme of work across four key functions (developing the health data community, commissioning research, influencing, and advocating and communications and media)
- Defining appropriate metrics to measure the impact of UPD, in line with UPD Advisory Board success framework, and ensure UPD delivers within project budget.
- Managing and motivating the 2x UPD Policy and Engagement Managers to deliver UPD’s work
- Acting as an Ambassador and the public face of UPD, representing UPD at external meetings and as a spokesperson for the media
- Providing policy advice and analysis about public attitudes to inform Government, NHS England and the wider NHS, HDR-UK and other stakeholder decisions and communications about uses of patient data.

- Have excellent communication skills and are able to communicate key concepts clearly to a wide range of expert and non-expect audiences
- Understand and are passionate about health data and building trustworthy data sources
- Have proven stakeholder management skills, including the ability to convene stakeholders and structure their contributions to deliver an outcome
- Are able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and lead others in delivering a mixed portfolio of policy work.
