Sole / Head Gardener

Cirencester, United Kingdom National Gardens Specialist Full time

Job Details
- **Head / Sole Gardener near Bibury, Cirencester.**

The garden owners have embarked on a major programme of restoration and improvement. The work has been undertaken to an exceptionally high standard and with great sympathy and understanding of the historic estate’s earlier significance.

The 7 acre garden and estate includes a wide range of horticultural and estate elements. There is a river and weir, woodland and meadow, formal and informal sections, a long perennial border, bulbs, bonsai, orchard, and a parterre / herb garden. The garden is currently being improved with new additions including an incredible cloud hedge and a moss garden. A major installation of mature topiary is currently being added. There is potential to establish a productive garden to support the house.

Plans for the wider gardens are likely to develop with the Head Gardeners input in conjunction with the owners and it is expected that the garden will continue to evolve, particularly as the renovation of the House nears completion.

The Head Gardener will oversee all aspects of the garden and general estate management. This is absolutely a hands-on role.

The Head Gardener will be line managed by the estate manager but will have direct communication and a working relationship with the owners. They should ideally have experience of private service and have the confidence in their ability to bring suitable ideas forward for consideration.

**Essential qualities**:
The Head Gardener must be tidy, organised, and show meticulous attention to detail.

Be inquisitive, enquiring, and keen to further develop their knowledge - and be proactive at finding practical solutions.

Show a real passion for the garden and in working with the owners to move the garden forward - and be able to share and establish an appropriate pallet and aesthetic for the garden.

Establish a very high standard for the team at all times.

Have very good plant knowledge with an eye and understanding of how to place and care for plants correctly. This will include propagation, pruning (there will be an amazing but quite manageable range of topiary and cloud hedging to perfect).
