Hours: Full time although part time (minimum 30 hours per week) will be considered.
Hybrid working options will be considered with minimum number of days required on site per week typically at least 60%.

About the role
Following the recent refurbishment of the library at Daresbury an exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Librarian to work as part of a team of librarians supporting the provision of library services at STFC. The role will be part of the library services team delivering library services across STFC and has staff based at both the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire and the Daresbury Laboratory (DL) in Cheshire. This post will be based at the Daresbury Laboratory.

Examples of the work required include but are not limited to:
Service delivery:

- Act as primary front of house manager for local library services and enquiries at Daresbury Laboratory.
- Responsible for oversight of and management of the Daresbury reading room environment ensuring the space is welcoming and functional liaising with Estates and other colleagues as required.
- Working in collaboration with the other Assistant Librarians to provide frontline enquiry support, monitoring the library mailbox and responding to requests (virtually or in person) from both STFC staff and external enquiries.
- Explain library procedures, services and resources to library users and conduct in person and online library inductions as part of the regular induction process. Arrange tutorials for library resources and services.
- Manage circulation activities, including processing item holds, checking out and returning items at the Daresbury site.
- Promote library services and resources using internal communication channels.

Collection management and collection development:

- Collection management of the physical collection (books and journals) at Daresbury. Conduct stock checks and weed material as required to ensure collection relevancy. Maintain and update print serials liaising with external suppliers as necessary e.g. claiming missing items.
- Contribute to the selection of book titles (print and electronic) and collection development activities taking account of customer needs.
- Deal with material requests including interlibrary loan and document delivery services for Daresbury staff.
- Cataloguing, classification and indexing library materials at Daresbury.
- Catalogue the Halton book collection and manage turnover of books quarterly, coordinating with Halton Library staff.
- Working as part of a team of Assistant Librarians across the sites and on a rotation other duties and responsibilities may include:

- Contribute to cross site/cross service projects e.g. data cleansing.
- Managing user accounts on library systems e.g. Open Athens registrations
- Coordinate the collection of usage statistics contributing to the periodic review of subscriptions and service reviews.
- Assist with renewals administration.
- Contribute to the development of services for example gathering user feedback through surveys and engagement activities.
- Contributing to the submission of materials into the publication’s repository, updating metadata and quality checking of records.

We are looking for a dedicated and motivated individual who can an demonstrate an excellent customer service ethos and be comfortable working both as part of a team and on your own. You will be able to effectively manage your own time and workload, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate the ability to develop and enhance the team’s service to our library users.
You will have an awareness of and a keen interest in the delivery of library services and development of library collections management and awareness of the developments in open science and how they impact on library services.
Occasional travel which may require overnight stays to attend meetings and training events within the UK is a requirement of this role.
