The Hartford’s International Actuarial team is a team of strategic business partners responsible for delivering expert consultation via pricing and other analytical tools, financial/reserving analysis, and capital modelling advice. With the integration of Navigators, The Hartford is enhancing its actuarial capabilities in the International segment, with a large focus on the London market.
This position has an important impact on the Company’s success, working in close partnership with our leadership in Underwriting, Finance, and Claims, as well as thought partners on The Hartford’s U.S. Actuarial team. The individual will partner directly with the leadership for The Hartford’s International Casualty & Political Risks underwriting division, and be responsible for analyses that influence the success of all classes of businesses within the division. This individual should have strong technical and analytical skills, be able to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences, and be able to influence business partners.

**Responsibilities**:
This individual will perform a variety of actuarial functions, including pricing model enhancements and development, profitability studies, reserving analyses, and monitoring of key actuarial leading indicators to influence leadership in setting business strategy.
Pricing
- Develop, enhance and maintain actuarial pricing tools used by the underwriting and sales teams for all classes of business within the Casualty & Political Risks underwriting division.
- Perform insightful account-specific analyses that enable the business to price new and renewal policies. This will require the actuary to challenge the status quo and think creatively as well as to communicate complex concepts to business partners.
- Identify and analyse critical pricing and profitability benchmarks to support portfolio management activities, including internal pricing results and competitor/market information when available.
- Support the Pricing Lead in developing and rolling out the segmentation and portfolio management roadmap.
- Partner with actuarial and other colleagues from The Hartford who support similar lines of business to share pricing best practices and insights.
Reserving
- Develop new analytic tools and enhance current tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of reserve reviews and to deliver improved insights to business partners.
- Conduct quarterly reserve analyses for all classes of business within Casualty & Political Risks and communicate findings and recommendations to leadership.
General
- Complete sophisticated actuarial analyses and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to business partners to make operational changes where necessary.
- Conduct actuarial analysis for the International Operating Plan and Loss Ratio Planning processes for Casualty & Political Risks classes of business.
- Partner with Underwriting and Claims to harvest expert input for modelling reserve risk volatility and parameterisation input for capital model purposes.
- Monitor and influence data quality—initiate and participate in the development of procedures to improve data quality. Investigate how data resources both internal and external to the company can be leveraged to bring insight to the business,
- Develop partnership with Underwriting, Claims, Finance, U.S. Actuarial, and other areas of the International business segment.
- Perform other ad hoc analysis across pricing, reserving, capital and reporting, across any line of business, as required.
Experience & Skills
- Studying towards fellowship of IFoA (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum 2+ years of general insurance actuarial experience
- London (Lloyds) market experience is preferred, but not required
- Knowledge of actuarial pricing and reserving techniques
- Experience in Casualty and/or Political Risks is a plus, but not required
- Must be a thought leader; demonstrate analytical skills and offer creative solutions to business questions; exhibit a process efficiency/improvement mindset
- Strong verbal/written communication skills; must be able to effectively communicate complex technical concepts in understandable terms to business partners
- Ability to develop strong working relationships and the ability to interact with and influence our business partners
- Strong project management and teamwork skills; flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities
