An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Senior Advanced Practitioner in Glaucoma to work as part of the glaucoma team within the Princess of Wales Hospital, in the Bridgend Eye Unit.

This is open to all non-medical practitioners with relevant glaucoma experience and qualifications and is a permanent post of 30 hours per week.

The post holder will play a key role leading the future development of glaucoma services and lead the Ophthalmic Diagnostic Treatment Clinics at Princess of Wales and Maesteg Hospitals, with additional professional clinical guidance from the Consultant Ophthalmologists, national guidelines and professional knowledge. This will include continual evaluation of services and forward thinking to further develop services in line with service demands and population need.

The glaucoma team is a diverse, multidisciplinary experienced group of staff working across all levels of the glaucoma service.

Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend and Maesteg hospital are located on the Welsh South Coast within easy commuting distance to Cardiff and Swansea.

Bridgend is a friendly town, ten minutes from un-spoilt beaches.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post but not essential; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The post holder will play a key role in developing glaucoma services, with additional professional clinical guidance from the Consultant Ophthalmologist, national policy and professional knowledge, evaluating the service provided and future scope.

The post holder will provide specialist clinical input and leadership to the glaucoma and ODTC clinics and the staff working within that field. They will develop procedural protocols, professional advice and training packages for other professionals involved within the Glaucoma & ODTC Service.

The College of Optometrists Professional Higher Certificate in Glaucoma or College of Ophthalmologists OPT Level 3 in Glaucoma is an essential requirement for these clinics as it is specifically designed to prepare optometrists/orthoptists/ophthalmic nurses in the diagnosis of the different glaucoma types.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The College of Optometrists Professional Higher Certificate in Glaucoma or College of Ophthalmologists OPT Level 3 in Glaucoma is an essential requirement for these clinics as it is specifically designed to prepare optometrists/orthoptists/ophthalmic nurses in the diagnosis of the different glaucoma types.

Using a range of clinical skills including slit lamp, Goldmann tonometry and gonioscopy, with highly specialist knowledge of optical coherence tomography and visual fields to assess and manage complex glaucoma patients. A Consultant Ophthalmologist is consulted only when needed for guidance on management of cases beyond the general competencies required. These patients would previously have been reviewed by an ophthalmologist. These examinations are tailored to individual patient requirements and require prolonged concentration. Examinations will be comprehensive & commensurate with clinical experience at Master’s degree level, acting with guidance from national and local recommendations.

Following appropriate competency based training, to perform highly specialised YAG laser capsulotomy, Yag Peripheral iridotomy and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), contributing to the efficient delivery of the ophthalmology clinic services.
