**What you’ll be doing**:
How do you make a submarine environmentally sustainable? That's the challenge we face each day at BAE Systems as we progress the design and build of multiple submarine programmes. Here at BAE Systems Submarines we have a team of environmental specialists within each of the programmes providing environmental advice, support, guidance and instruction to ensure that environmental considerations and requirements are embedded from the outset.

As a principal environmental specialist you will lead a wide range of environmental activities with responsibility for engaging with internal and external stakeholders to gather, assess and report the environmental information that will help demonstrate the environmental case for each submarine. You'll implement our Design for the Environment process looking for opportunities to minimise and mitigate environmental impacts and risks through design.

You'll lead on report production providing sound environmental and technical justifications and use your specialism to be a Subject Matter Expert and key go-to point of contact for the programmes.

**Your skills and experiences**:
**Essential**:

- In depth understanding of environmental assessment approaches and ability to consider and assess environmental aspects across the lifecycle.
- Demonstrable evidence of providing technical environmental guidance to others.
- Strong report writing / presentation skills and ability to develop and convey environmental justifications
- Knowledge and implementation of Environmental Management Systems and Plans - e.g. ISO 140001, POEMS
- Sound understanding of environmental legislation and how it relates to products
- Good stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
- Successful management and delivery of environmental projects through team-working

**Desirable**:

- Experience within Defence and or engineering sector
- Knowledge of defence environmental standards.
- In depth understanding of one or more of the following: materials technology, environmental legislation, disposal and/or net zero.

**The Environmental Specialist Team**:
As well as being an integral part of the environmental team, the individual will be working with system designers and engineers, specialists from other interfacing disciplines such as legislation and materials technology, as well as net zero (carbon footprinting) project teams. There is also opportunity to engage with other environmental departments within Submarines (Sustainability, Operational SHE) and other BAE Systems lines of business

The individual will also interface with key project stakeholders including Industrial Partners (e.g. Rolls-Royce and Babcock), the MOD and the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA).
