This is a 12-month fixed term Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from 07/08/2024 to 05/08/2025.

This post is part of the HEE KSS / BSMS Leadership and Education Fellowship (LEF) Programme and is jointly funded by Health Education England working across Kent, Surrey and Sussex (HEE KSS), Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust.

The focus of this Higher Specialty Trainee level fellowship post is to improve the local education and experience of the medical workforce. One position will be supporting the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Workforce with Leadership Projects relating to Mental Health and LD & Education and Training. The other position available will have a focus on projects directly related to Postgraduate Medical Education within the trust. The postholder will carry out a range of leadership and education tasks and take the lead on project(s) as agreed with the local sponsor to achieve this.

The role also has a focus on developing the postholder’s own leadership and education capability. This will be achieved through the work-based project(s) and a bespoke development programme including the Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership and Commissioning at BSMS.

The role includes a clinical component to enable the postholder to maintain and develop their clinical skills.

Leadership is a key part of doctors’ professional work regardless of speciality and setting. It is already a requirement of all doctors as laid out in the General Medical Council’s (GMC) publications Good Medical Practice, Tomorrow’s Doctors and also Management for Doctors. While the primary focus for doctors is on their professional practice, all doctors work in systems and within organisations. It is a vitally important fact that doctors have a direct and far-reaching impact on patient experience and outcomes. Doctors have a legal duty broader than any other health professional and therefore have an intrinsic leadership role within healthcare services. They have a responsibility to contribute to the effective running of the organisation in which they work and to its future direction. The development of leadership competence needs to be an integral part of a doctor’s training and learning.

**The Leadership fellow will**:
Support with projects specifically relating to Leadership in Medical Education, Mental Health and LD, in turn trying to build on some of the Leadership headings based on the NHS Leadership and Medical Leadership Competency Frameworks below during their fellowship.
