We have an amazing opportunity for a PACKAGING TECHNOLOGIST to join a very exciting manufacturing company in Flintshire.

The role will be responsible for the development and effective delivery within defined timescales of all primary and secondary packaging innovation projects.

Scope of role

This role is responsible for the co-ordination of packaging projects generated from both within the business and its customers. This role will also be responsible for technical line trials on new primary and secondary packaging materials, ensuring that all materials / product development are compatible with manufacturing processes and machinery. This role will also have responsibility for compatibility testing of new liquids ensuring that they are compatible with primary packaging for our three manufacturing facilities. This role is of a cross functional nature between Packaging, Engineering, Manufacturing & Marketing, in order to ensure that both current and future packaging materials and technologies are communicated and developed effectively within the business. In addition, it is imperative the business receives a clear understanding of any progress made and potential technical difficulties preventing development.

This role will also include a requirement to communicate with customer representatives on packaging requirements - either on a 1:1 technical basis or as part of a broader commercial discussion

Skills and ability
- Computer skills - to maintain store and process computerised data spreadsheets in the most efficient and easily understandable manner.
- Accuracy - The ability to ensure that all approvals of artwork, primary and secondary materials are accurately authorised. Attention to detail is critical.
- Planning - The ability to plan ahead and prioritise workload to ensure that business requirements are met in a timely fashion.
- Report writing - the ability to write clear and concise pre-trial instructions and detailed reports.

Responsibilities and tasks

Communication
- To develop and maintain a good understanding of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, suppliers (existing and new) and packaging innovation within the industry.
- Supporting New Product Development (NPD) through sourcing and developing of packaging materials.
- Identification of cost savings to the business through packaging innovation and/ or materials development.
- To conduct and report back on Primary and Secondary materials trials and testing ensuring that these are approved and specified.
- To create palletisation configurations following line trials using a palletisation software system.
- The creation of material specifications and approval of customer artwork including internal specifications.
- Testing of new liquids to ensure compatibility with primary and secondary packaging.
- Maintenance of the packaging materials database and specification libraries.
- To provide support and assistance to Packaging colleagues in order to ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Provide support to Sales and Marketing in terms of key packaging developments with an understanding of sustainability, packaging waste directives and the environment.

Project Management
- Working with other colleagues as required, to manage packaging development projects
- To be part of cross functional project teams and oversee the packaging requirement of the project

Problem solving
- To be able to manage and prioritise a high-volume workload when dealing with numerous customers' requirements both internally and externally.
- Able to understand packaging materials and processes in order that when issues arise, either through the development or manufacturing processes, that effective solutions are suggested to the relevant parties.
- When faced with inaccuracies contained in data, to ensure this information is corrected and communicated as soon as practicably possible.

Health and safety obligations
- Ensure compliance with Company Health & Safety rules & procedures
- Ensure that all machinery / equipment is maintained and used in a safe manner at all times
- Work with Engineering on new packaging equipment requirements including at development and concept stage
- Ensure housekeeping is of sufficient high standards in compliance with safety requirements (external audit standard).
- Ensure any accidents are investigated promptly and any corrective actions identified are implemented as soon as possible.
- Ensure that all PPE is supplied and used properly (Keeping register of use)
- Ensure that all staff (Permanent, Temporary, Agency, Contractor) are aware of the evacuation procedures.
- Ensure that the disciplinary procedure is followed for individuals who break or flout Health & Safety rules and procedures.
