Mental Health Support Worker

**Job Profile**
The post holder is employed by Elm Tree House to work primarily, but not exclusively with clients living in the home. The post-holder may on occasion be required to work within the residential unit as and when requested by the home manager.
Responsible to the home manager, under the supervision of the team leader, the post-holder will provide a variety of help to clients in their own home dependant on their physical and emotional needs. The post-holder must be familiar with the aims and objectives of the home at which they are employed and should ensure that their practice accords with these principles. Examples of the work to be carried out are as follows:
- Undertake any responsible duties within the client’s home which would normally be done by the client or a competent relative, with regard to the clients wishes and to an agreed assessment but where necessary responding with initiative to unusual circumstances.
- Attends to tasks agreed with the manager, to the personal needs of the client, all of which are aimed at creating a supportive, homely, atmosphere and include:
Domestic duties, cooking, cleaning, laundering and other general household maintenance tasks.
To over see and prompt washing, shaving, bathing, and toilet needs.
Social and other duties such as talking with the clients, shopping, assisting with monies and payments, dispensing medication, assisting with family, social contacts, and other services as necessary.
Give health care under the direction of the supervisor, GP or primary health workers as would be reasonable of a caring relative.
Develops skills and understanding of the special needs of the clients who may be physically or mentally frail or suffer from disabilities.
Maintains work records e.g., work sheets, receipts etc.
Collects prescribed charges from the clients as notified by the manager following the agreed guidelines.
Uses such equipment and substances as are necessary to the completion of the tasks e.g., cleaning chemicals, domestic electrical equipment, hoists etc all within the appropriate Health and Safety guidelines and observing prescribed procedures for fire and health and safety.
Liaises with other professionals, family, neighbours, and volunteers etc as necessary.
Attends training courses and the follow-up refresher courses as appropriate, particularly relating to Health and Safety and emergency procedures.
Undertakes other such duties as may be required by the manager or supervisor.
- To carry out a regular check on service users at intervals determined by the manager and with due regard for service user’s privacy and dignity.
- To carry out regular checks on the building at intervals determined by the manager with special reference to fire prevention and security.
- To answer emergency calls from service users, to assess the situation. To deal with the service user seeking help and to summon senior on call staff wherever necessary.
- To assist service users who need help and reassurance.
- To join with the day care, staff in preparing service users for bed and assisting them in the morning as directed.
- In the time available between attending to service users, undertake domestic duties primarily in the fields of laundry, ironing, food preparation and table laying and/or cleaning as directed.
- To maintain accurate notes and records in service users’ notes and to handover information to day staff that is relevant to the ongoing care of individual service users.
- Such other duties as may be required.
All staff are required to respect the confidentiality of all matters that they may learn in the course of their employment. All staff are expected to respect the requirements under the Data Protection Act 1998. All staff must ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities under the Health and Safety Act at Work 1974.
