**We have a great opportunity for a Student SHE Advisor to join our Transportation division here at Costain, working on the M6 Smart Motorway project between Wigan and Warrington on a 8 week Fixed Term Contract.**

**About the project**
The M6 between junctions 21a and 26 is a key 16.4km strategic route carrying around 120,000 vehicles daily between Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester. Congestion and unreliable journey times are currently experienced at busy periods and traffic is predicted to grow. The scheme will relieve congestion and smooth the flow of traffic, improving safety and journey times.

The Smart motorway solution is a technology-driven approach to tackling the most congested parts of the motorway network, improving journey reliability by controlling the flow and speed of traffic. They also support the economy by providing much-needed capacity on the busiest motorways, while maintaining safety for road users and those who work on the roads.

The design features of the scheme include embankment regrades and retaining solutions including crib walls, king post walls and soil nailing verge and centre reservation drainage, deltabloc concrete safety barrier and surfacing. Piled gantry bases, formwork, reinforcement and concrete works variable mandatory speed limits.

Driver information, including lane availability, provided through a mixture of gantries and signs (cantilever, super cantilever and superspan). Queue detection and automatic signalling system, which provides queue protection and congestion management. comprehensive low light pan-tilt-zoom CCTV coverage. refuge areas where drivers can stop in an emergency.

**Responsibilities**:

- Working as part of a Framework/Project support to the Framework/Project SHE Manager in their role.
- Understand the Company Health & Safety and Environmental Policies and Procedures and statutory requirements as they affect the Project operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented
- Assist in providing operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents, ill health, environmental incidents and the practical implementation of the company's SHE policies
- Assist in providing operational and functional management with advice for obtaining legal consents, licences and exemptions such as discharge consents, abstraction licences and waste management licences
- Assist the Project Manager or Framework/Project SHE/E Manager in preparing and developing the Framework/Project Health, Safety and Environmental Management Plan ('HASEMP') & coordinator reviews
- Undertake site SHE inspections as directed
- Assist where necessary with tenders
- When directed, assist with the preparation of SHE risk assessments and Method Statements
- Assist with the monitoring and reporting of Project SHE Performance as directed
- Assist in the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of SHE training courses, as directed
- Actively promote the company 'BE SAFE', 'BE HEALTHY' and 'SAVE IT' campaigns in addition to the implementation of best practice principles across the business, to include stakeholders such as the supply chain
- Set standards and lead by example in the management of SHE
- Maintain own level of knowledge and competency in relation to SHE management and responsibilities including appropriate qualification and professional
- Obtain competency cards in line with company Competence Card Compliance policy, e.g. CSCS / CCNSG

**Essential (minimum required)**
- Bsc Health and Safety Management
- Under graduate study or equivalent diploma that gains IOSH Technical Safety Practitioner Status

**Desirable (the ideal)**
- A degree with an element of Environmental management preferred
- CMIOSH & AIEMA
