On the energy side we are supporting the decarbonisation of the UK's energy infrastructure by improving existing asset efficiency and life extension while leading the transition to a sustainable clean, green energy future - working on projects like Carbon Capture Pipeline, Hydrogen production and storage, new compression projects within existing oil & gas plants and maintenance of existing oil/gas/petrochemical plants.
Within Civils, Costain engage in complex delivery projects involving either the construction of new infrastructure assets or upgrading & refurbishing existing assets. We regularly bid for schemes for a number of clients typically within the Road, Rail, Water & Defence sectors on opportunities ranging from £20m up to around £1billion
The value of tenders prepared can vary from a £5k engineering study to a £60m engineering and supply contract. Also working on the preparation of turnkey estimates up to £1 Billion, through which the Client receives a fully operating plant. The estimate would include the costing of the plant equipment, structure, foundations, civils content, manpower/hours to complete project.
**About the role**
Costain are looking to hire one Apprentice Estimator for Civils Structural (Transportation) and one Apprentice Estimator for Energy (Natural Resources).
Both based in the Costain Manchester Office with some travel to client sites and offices and working in the Shape and Win estimating team. The role of an estimator in Costain is to price all the work associated with the delivery of a project.
- Shadowing Lead and Senior estimating staff to understand the role of an estimator
- Gain an understanding of estimating and develop basic skills and techniques
- Develop an awareness and experience of construction techniques and work programming which are used as a basis of estimating
- Develop IT skills to undertake basic estimating tasks particularly within Excel and estimating software packages
- Develop understanding of estimating analysis, review and benchmarking
**What does joining an apprenticeship at Costain offer you?**
There are a wide range of apprenticeships available, both in levels of qualification and length of study.
The level and training provider for your apprenticeship will depend on the skills you present at interview. The Early Careers team will register you with a suitable training provider who can support the delivery of your qualification. Being an apprentice means you will work both on-the-job with your project at site, and off-the-job with the provider.
When taking on one of the many apprenticeships on offer by Costain, you will be supported by your project line manager and team, the Costain Early Careers Team, and the training provider of your academic qualification. The training provider may be a college, a university or even an independent training provider.
You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by your local team and line manager, and you will be given time to carry out your studies with the provider etc. Your on-the-job training will be in line with the work available on site but will afford the opportunity to ensure that you are given on site experience required to meet the technical and competency levels to achieve your apprenticeship goal.
**About you**
You will need to:
- Have the equivalent of 5 GCSEs, grades A*-C or 9-4, including Maths, Science and English
- A-Levels or Level 3 Equivalent in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
- Driving license preferred (due to travel to client sites)
- Be organised and able to work well to deadlines
- Have the ability to undertake do many things a variety of tasks and be able to choose assess what is the most important
- Be committed to getting it right the first time
- Show interest in keeping up the latest technologies
- Be able to work well within a team and equally on your own
- Be proficient in presenting work and communicating ideas within the team
