One of our local authority clients are currently recruiting for a Museum Curator. This is a temporary contract for 6 months with possible further extension based on budget and performance.

Main Purpose of Post/Job Summary

The successful post holder will be responsible for the day to day care and documentation of museum service collections. The post holder will support the vision of the museum service through active involvement in the exhibition, activities, events and outreach programmes as well as the care of collections. They will also assist in the museum maintaining its Accreditation, support the audience engagement activities of the museum service and work as part of the Museum Service Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

* To work as part of the Museum Team in carrying out the strategic plans for the service

* To provide the day-to-day management of the museum collections in order to achieve service and council objectives.

* To document museum collections using written and computerised systems as appropriate, utilising photography to meet spectrum standards and in line with accreditation.

* To ensure the care of the collections through pursuing a preventative conservation programme including environmental control and monitoring, housekeeping, integrated pest management and control of storage areas in order to raise standards.

* To carry out a programme of retrospective documentation to increase access to the collection and to meet the council’s obligations,

* To maintain the collections in line with external standards e.g. Accreditation, Benchmarks in Collections Care

* To assess the conservation needs of the collections and source remedial treatment where appropriate.

* To drive improvements in collections care through project work where appropriate.

* To supervise volunteers and contractors working with collections and/or in collection storage areas. To recruit, supervise and organise the volunteers in relation to collections work to ensure safe working practices and the smooth efficient working of the service.

* To work with other members of the team where appropriate to ensure appropriate levels of collections care are maintained whilst items are in use for exhibitions, activities or outreach purposes.
