The Highway Laboratory provides specialist testing and advice on the suitability and use of construction materials as well as approval testing on new construction and investigations of older roads to inform best remedial options.

Th carry out materials testing both inside and outside the laboratory in order to deliver the requirements of the service. Testing is carried out using a range of specialist equipment and tools following published standards and in house methods.

Key Responsibilities:

Undertake a wide variety of laboratory and site testing as required.
Learn various test methods under senior staff instruction, demonstrating competence through internal audits.
Conduct laboratory testing on materials such as soils, aggregates, bituminous materials, and concrete, from sample receipt to data processing.
Perform field testing on natural ground and man-made highway construction materials, including sampling from stockpiles or operating trailer-mounted coring rigs.

Job Requirements:

Experience in the testing of soils and construction materials or site investigations and in situ testing of soils and other materials is beneficial but not essential.
Capability to work effectively within a team and independently to meet workload requirements.
Willingness to learn new skills and undergo training and assessment.
Good time management and organisational skills.
Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, with potential work on construction sites, highways, or undeveloped land.
Strong attention to detail, as laboratory testing results have significant real-world implications.
Practical ability and problem-solving skills.
Competent ICT skills, particularly with software packages such as Microsoft Office.
