Today, the client is a leading global port and terminal infrastructure provider, serving approximately 2,000 customers in 141 ports and 40 terminals across 37 countries through a fleet of 456 vessels, and with more than 4000 employees.

As our Marine Assistant, you will assist the Port Manager and wider port management team to ensure that effective and efficient marine operations are maintained within the port. This includes supporting delegated managerial tasks, attending tugs and visiting crews on a regular basis. The Marine Assistant will also support as required the Marine and Technical Superintendent to ensure compliance and various administrative tasks are completed within specified deadlines and to the required standards.

This position is based at Felixstowe but from time to time as part of the role you may be required to travel within the UK and to other global locations.

The role will be offered on a fixed term basis for up to 12 months (Maternity Cover).

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

* To assist in the management of the marine operations ensuring that the client obligations for availability of expertise, equipment and personnel are always met in order to maintain customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

* To support the Marine/Technical Superintendent, to maximise the operational efficiency and effectiveness of marine operations and marine equipment in compliance with the client operating manuals and HMS system, with a particular emphasis on health & safety issues, lifesaving/firefighting equipment, management of PPE and vessel and crew certification.

* To provide operational support to port management team and crew in order to maintain efficient towage operations. To assist in all areas of the operations team where required.

* To provide operational support and local expertise to Customer Service Operators ensuring commercial decisions and servicing priorities have minimal impact on the port operation and its customers.

* To support Customer Service Operators to maximise fleet utilisation and increase potential revenues (i.e. spot work, upcoming projects), guiding and assisting where appropriate

* To attend and support customer and stakeholder meetings as directed by the Port Manager

* In absence of Port Manager oversee drug and alcohol testing for shore and crew.

* Act as point of contact in absence of other members of Port Management team for customers, agents and stakeholders on local matters.

* To assist in the coordination of training and development ensuring that marine (deck and engine) personnel meet the client, national and international requirements with respect to certification and training. Liaising closely with the Crewing and Training team.

* Work with the Marine/Technical Superintendent to ensure safe and effective transfer of vessels between ports and associated familiarisation of personnel to vessels.

* Ordering of fuel and consumables as required, ensuring delivery and receipt of items is correct as per the order.

* Responsible for delivery and collection of operational and technical items to and from vessels on a daily basis. If unmanned berths, responsible for meeting and overseeing deliveries/collections from the berth(s).

* Assist in the maintenance of the Quality and Safety Management System.

* Assist the Port Manager/Marine Superintendent/Technical Superintendent with any administration as required, including post and courier services.

* To undertake other duties as required in line with port requirements.

* Any other reasonable management request

* If responsible for more than one port the ability to travel independently on a regular basis between locations.

What we are looking for in a candidate.

Qualifications:

* 5 GCSE’s or equivalent essential

* Previously worked in a team environment essential

* Seagoing experience preferred but not essential

* Experience with small craft preferred

* An understanding or having worked with trade union processes preferred but not essential

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

* Operational understanding of vessel movements and towage operations around the relevant port(s) where the vacancy is situated
