JOB SUMMARRY:

To provide quality care for a group of vulnerable, young people with Social emotional and mental health Difficulties including young people with complex behaviours and learning disabilities, within an OFSTED registered residential Home.

Including the running and management of the home as the Registered Manager.

HOURS OF WORK:

Your normal working week will be a 5-day week Mon-Fri 9.00am -17.00pm, however you will be expected to keep these hours flexible. These Hours may vary and could include weekends and sleep-Ins to meet the needs of the service.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Working under the direction of the Responsible Individual actively contribute to the provision of quality care, within which the health, welfare, education, and development of young people is promoted and to promote a coherent ethos of care consistent with the overall culture of the Homes Statement of Purpose. To ensure that there is an appropriate Statement of Purpose for the home and that this document is updated on a regular basis.

To be involved in the development and maintaining of quality initiatives within the home.

To contribute towards the maintenance of a positive, safe, and homely environment, including the promotion of a warm and accepting atmosphere, where the safety and care of young people is paramount. Working with the Responsible Individual to ensure proper and appropriate nurturing for all young people with particular attention to the provision of primary care in matters of food, health, clothing, and environment. Ensure that the protection and welfare of young people/young adults is the paramount consideration to the staff team.

To ensure that the standards within the home are maintained and developed in line with the Care Standards Act 2000 and the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015.

To attend young people’s meetings and professional’s meetings. To chair meetings where appropriate. To chair staff meetings and young people’s meetings. To liaise with other professional agencies.

In conjunction with the Responsible Individual to work proactively with and direct the team within the daily routine and agreed structures of the house, to include for example day to day parenting responsibilities, undertaking daily household responsibilities such as domestic chores, cooking, shopping, taking young people to appointments/meetings, planning out the day and participation in activities with the young people and supporting in homework etc. You will be required to have good communication skills (written and verbal) the position involves being able to write and undertake comprehensive report writing.

To work with the holistic staff team [external education provisions] to build positive and appropriate working relationships with the young people.

To work in partnership with parents, social workers, agencies, and other professionals linked to the young person’s care plan to effectively fulfil the responsibility of parenting the young people, ensuring the maintenance of family contact where appropriate.

As directed by the Responsible Individual, undertake the checking and sampling of key working sessions and assign responsibility for individual young people in the house focusing on the specific needs identified in the care plan for the young person. Contribute to the writing of the care plan and other plans, implementing and monitoring progress.

To follow and act in accordance with all relevant aspects of legislation, regulations - including the quality care standards, the company’s policies, and procedures. Ensure own understanding of how such issues are interpreted and followed in practice keeping up to date with changes. Maintain a clean and safe environment paying particular attention to Health and Safety legislation and environmental health needs.

To build positive and appropriate working relationships with the young people, ensuring adherence to boundaries and consistency of care practice.

To work collectively with team members in using effective care practice, de-escalating and diversionary strategies and recognised techniques to manage young people who exhibit challenging, threatening, and confrontational behaviour. Consistently act in accordance with company Positive Relationship Policy (Previously Known as the Behaviour Management Policy) and ensure appropriate recording of incidents.

Working in conjunction with team members ensure the creation and maintenance of a culture which shows in practice and knowledge an understanding of the differing cultural, racial and religious needs of young people. Work constructively to enhance the positive value of working with difference to challenge attitudes and practice, which are inappropriate or unacceptable within the ethos of the home.

Undertake appropriate training, including induction and all regulatory and mandatory training for the home including training as specified by the Responsible Individual and/or the Director. To organise, deliver and co-ordinate induction, supervision, appraisal, and support to individual staff. To provide operational management of the staff team and to deploy staff resources in order that key objectives are fulfilled. Ensure that appraisals and personal development plans are undertaken and acted upon. Attend training programmes as required. Identify own and teams training needs.

To work effectively with and advise on complex cases and situations, including key work, successfully integrating theory and practice. To ensure that staff understand and implement the relevant safeguarding procedures in line with the homes policy guidance.

To assume responsibility for the operation of the home take the lead in decision making, ensure paperwork is completed to the required standards, and ensure effective handovers take place between the home and at the beginning of each shift.

To fully abide by and follow the company’s Health and Safety policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective working practices for the staff, young people and people visiting the premises.

Take responsibility for a designated area of work, practice development as directed by the Responsible individual.

In conjunction with the Responsible Individual and team, develop a positive public profile of the service ensuring good communication, relationships and that staff represent the service in a professional way.

To participate in one-to-one supervision with the Responsible Individual

To complete the required paperwork and reports that are required to be completed and any other paperwork as directed by the Responsible Individual to include monthly audit reports and Reg 45 reports for OFSTED. To carry out any other appropriate duties as directed by the Responsible Individual.

Co-ordinate and monitor staffing levels within the home to ensure that individual need is met. Be involved in the company’s selection and recruitment process.

To be the designated person in charge of the home. To be a part of an on-call system outside of designated hours. To manage identified budgets.

Ensure the maximum care of Company property and equipment including storage.

Follow the guidelines as outlined in the Staff Handbook.

To work proactively with monitoring bodies to ensure that services are developing beyond the set standards.

You will always consider the effect of your presentation, communication and conduct will have on others and always endeavour to work as part of a team.

To undertake any other such duties assigned by the Director/RI.

To ensure that the company’s accounts regulations are adhered to.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Working Knowledge of young people and child development developed through working directly with young people.

An understanding of current legislation and OFSTED requirements Knowledge and understanding of the Children’s Homes Regulations (2015) and Quality Care Standards. An understanding of the principles underpinning the regulations including the quality care standards.

An understanding of the social, emotional, educational, cultural religious and recreational needs of young people

An understanding of safer recruitment in line with safeguarding and schedule 2 of the children’s homes regulations.

You will develop and lead a committed team to deliver excellent care to the residents of the house. You will help children to achieve their potential through the implementation of agreed care plans whilst actively promoting their rights.

You will ensure high standards of care in order to safeguard the wellbeing of the children/young people and provide a safe and homely environment in line with the Quality Standards of the Children's Homes Regulations 2015.

You will demonstrate an understanding of issues related to children in care and how best to achieve positive outcomes for them.

You will lead on all Ofsted related matters to the satisfaction of the regulator and ensure that the home is judged as good or outstanding.

SKILLS ANDS ABILITIES

You must hold the QCF/NVQ 5 in Leadership and Management or equivalent.

From April 2016, it is a requirement to hold a QCF Level 5, Leadership and Management qualification to work in residential childcare. It will therefore be essential criteria for the job.

Able to effectively use a range of strategies in dealing with confrontational or challenging behaviour from the young people including de-escalating and approved hold techniques.

Able to engage appropriately with young people and develop rapport. Able to engage in a variety of activities to develop and sustain appropriate relationships with young people. Ability to manage personal and professional boundaries maintaining appropriate relationships with staff and young people. Able to form and sustain positive and professional working relationships.

Able to use initiative and work autonomously within the boundaries of the role.

Ability to cope with the pressure of a residential care setting. Able to demonstrate a genuine desire and interest in working with challenging young people. Able to demonstrate consistency of approach in dealing with a range of young people. Able to handle own emotions and feelings, without over empathising with the young person.
