TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People aim to provide help to those who need it, supporting people in poverty and the vulnerable who are unable to afford advice and when the service provided by HMRC has not resolved their problem.
Are you inspired by the idea that you could make a real difference to the lives of those we help? If so, we are recruiting for a Tax Advice Manager and would love to hear from you.
You will be responsible for a small team of advisers and oversight of our helpline and volunteers to ensure accuracy and consistency in the quality of our advice.
You will also work on developing and enhancing relationships with our key stakeholders including HMRC and other tax professionals.
Job Title: Tax Advice Manager
Location: Hybrid working, with, on average, one to two days a week in the office in London.
Full time or job share
Technical support, primarily in personal tax, to both staff and volunteers, in reply to queries and systematic review of calls and casework.
Deliver training to third sector partners, staff and volunteers.
Respond to technical queries raised by tax advisers and caseworkers, both staff and volunteers.
Prepare and deliver training to third sector partners, staff and volunteers
Review calls and casework in accordance with the quality control framework to manage the consistency of the advice, working with the operations manager to do so.
Manage the technical update of the charities’ websites
Prepare and update technical training materials
Manage relationships with HMRC in respect of operational issues and tax technical aspects relevant to funded projects
The Senior Management Team (SMT)
Members of the Project Team
Team members to manage the quality of the service provided.
Professional qualification in tax – ATT as a minimum, or similarly qualified by experience
Experience in personal tax, particularly relevant are the tax issues of the self-employed and employees.
Good IT skills to include, tax software and Microsoft packages
Permanent role for 3/5 days per week.
Plus pension.
Holiday allowance starting at 23 days annual leave per year, rising by 1 day per year to a maximum of 28 days (after 5 years) plus bank holidays and additional discretionary days at Christmas.

As an organisation, we use our skills to help poor, vulnerable people struggling with their tax.
Working in a small charity offering services to the community can be stressful so we are supportive of each other. We enjoy our work and actively empathise with the people we help. We are looking for professionals, those who are experts in their field, who can take pride in their work, while being open to learning new things and valuing others’ work.
We often have to translate the complexities of the tax system to those with little knowledge or experience of the tax system. Tax problems are stressful and can be confusing and vulnerable people find their tax issues particularly difficult and rely on our welcoming and supportive approach. We know that more vulnerable people can be helped if we work in partnership with the tax profession and other specialist organisations who may have different skill sets but work with similar vulnerable groups. Therefore, we are looking for those who understand that we can achieve more together than alone and who display a warm and approachable attitude to partnership working, being respectful of the expertise of other organisations and groups, and have a willingness to learn new ways of helping people with their tax.
