Generic:

Responsible for delivery of projects from inception to completion through the development of the RIBA design stages. Providing effective design solutions through the interpretation of design briefs. Providing discipline expertise to designs across asset streams.

Role Overview:

  • Part of the structural engineering team that reports to the Principal Structural Design Manager, working collaboratively with multi-discipline engineering teams.
  • Responsible for effectively delivering and managing design solutions for large sized complex projects, from inception to in-service.
  • Works collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders including project managers, other engineering disciplines, end user, client, and maintenance organisation.
  • Efficiently self-manages own priority tasking and supports less experienced team members

Key responsibilities / tasks will include:

  • Take direction from the Principal Structural Design Manager for design tasks, program, and priority
  • Responsible for developing the client’s strategic requirement into a detailed Statement of Requirements (SOR) addressing performance, dependencies, test and commissioning, applicable standards/regulations, and acceptance criteria.
  • Responsible for building, developing, and managing multi-discipline internal and external design teams
  • Responsible for managing the design process factoring in timescales and feasibility of design elements in practice.
  • Conduct structural surveys, provide reports and repair specifications
  • Ensure designs align to client’s strategic and environmental objectives, including Net Zero Carbon etc, and actively offer innovations to support these objectives.
  • Support and advise the client regarding design elements.
  • Responsible for ensuring the design process meets the relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Responsible for checking that designs delivered by sub-contractors conform with the Statement of Requirement, standards/legislation, and the client’s strategic requirements.
  • Ensure that Design Risk Assessments are undertaken and managed within the design risk register and Health and Safety files.
  • Support the SHE department to review supplier Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • Responsible for ensuring and managing the quality of project handover.
  • Responsible for collating and reviewing proposed planned preventative maintenance (PPM) from suppliers, checking against regulatory/statutory requirements, and agreeing it with the maintenance organisation
  • Responsible for preparing Safe to Operate statements for endorsement by the Chief Engineer and client Principal Engineer.
  • Ensure that all work carried out is in accordance with the processes and procedures in the KBS Joint Management System.
  • Present and coordinate internal design review meetings.
  • Support the project managers and procurement department to review supplier tenders for compliance against the statement of requirements.

Specific monthly reporting duties include:

  • Responsible for monitoring and reporting progress on projects to the Principal Structural Design Manager at regular intervals including performance against PIs and KPIs.
  • Provide forecasted end dates and recommend recovery plans as needed.
  • Manage personally controlled project documentation in an orderly manner
  • Advise and liaise with project client, stakeholders, end user and the Safe to Operate team.

Your key competencies will be:

  • Communication and influencing – establishes communication routes and good working relationships, actively listens, clarifies, gives/seeks feedback, clear and concise, persuasive/negotiation.
  • Organizational skills – plans well in advance, sets clear objectives, shows initiative, reviews progress against plan, ensures enough resources, encourages improvements.
  • Presentation skills – able to convey concepts and lengthy work streams in clear, concise, and visually appealing formats, considering the target audience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree within Structural Engineering.
  • 10 plus years of experience in a relevant industry
  • Holding or working towards Chartered Engineer status.

Experience and Skills:

  • Familiar with multiple structural projects- new structures, repairs to existing structures, refurbishments, etc.
  • Familiar with multiple construction materials- concrete, masonry, steel etc.
  • Familiar with Listed Building repairs
  • Experience and knowledge of the full engineering lifecycle from inception to in-service
  • Excellent oral and written English
  • Knowledge of Building Regulations, British standards and Eurocodes, etc.
  • Knowledge of all engineering, procurement, and construction aspects of delivering major projects.
  • Ability to work directly with the client without direct management supervision and instruction
  • Logical thinking and working in an ordered fashion
