William `Bill` Tancred is a leading sports administrator, academic and former international athlete. He competed at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics in the discus and won bronze and silver medals in successive Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. He was the British National discus champion on 9 occasions and broke the British record nineteen times, the last stood for 25 years. On competitive retirement, he became coach to the British Athletics Board and to the International Amateur Athletics Federation.

He was a former regular soldier with the 1st East Anglian Regiment and the Army Physical Training Corps. After military service in Aden and at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, he attended Loughborough University and West Virginia University, USA the latter on a N.A.T.O. Fellowship. As an academic he lectured in schools, Colleges and Universities and among his many positions include being the Director of Physical Education and Sport at Sheffield University as well as being Professor of Sports Studies at Bucks New University and Professor of Sports & Exercise Science at Suffolk University.

Bill is a published author having written a number of books as well as many articles in journals and newspapers on subjects ranging from health related fitness, sports performance , healthy ageing and lifestyle management. During the past 5 years he has presented talks to many organisations both in the UK and abroad including conferences and in the business community.

During his long career he has served on numerous sports, health & well-being and fitness committees to include the Olympians and Active Suffolk.

In 1992 he was awarded the MBE for Services to Sport.
