Job Description
Virginia State University is a four-year, public comprehensive 1890 Land Grant institution and HBCU (Historically Black College/University) committed to the preparation of a diverse population and dedicated to using a holistic approach to academic excellence, and student success and engagement. VSU offers programs from the undergraduate to doctorate levels including majors in its Colleges of Engineering and Technology; Agriculture; Business; Education; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Natural and Health Sciences. Situated in Chesterfield County at Ettrick, VSU is accessible via Interstate Highways 95 and 85, which meet in Petersburg. The University is only two and a half hours away from Washington, D.C. to the north and the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area to the southwest. VSU’s Multipurpose Center was a COVID -19 Community Vaccination Center serving thousands daily, consistent with its values of serving communities. It is a founding member of Virginia’s Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing ( CCAM ) and the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems ( CCALS ). The Chair will serve as the chief administrative officer of the Department of Mathematics and Economics, and, as such, is expected to provide positive leadership across all facets of the department missions as well as participate in research and teaching activities. The primary responsibilities for this leadership position include; recruitment, mentoring, development, evaluation and promotion of faculty members; coordination, fairness and oversight of major departmental responsibilities; fostering linkage with external groups to strengthen ties with industry, state, federal, and local agencies; cultivate the departmental strategic plan for assessment, instruction, research, and service; and overall supervision of department staff, resources and the budget.
Candidate must possess a terminal degree (Ph.D.) in Mathematics or Statistics and warranting an appointment as a tenured associate/full professor in the department. Candidate must have an established record of excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in Mathematics and/or Statistics. The successful applicant should be able to provide evidence of records of research, grantsmanship and potential for administration. The appointed individual also must possess excellent oral and written communications skills, experience in teaching and working with persons of culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications
Administrative experience, including direct supervision of faculty, staff, budgets, and program development, and accomplishments. Preference will also be given to individuals who can provide evidence of experience in supervising research and in developing modern teaching pedagogy to students at all levels of academic ability. #J-18808-Ljbffr
