At SBSJ, we believe that every child has the right to a music education. Music surrounds us in our everyday lives and connects us to a pure and deeper part of ourselves.Our music curriculum seeks to expand, grow, and develop students' musical knowledge and skills through an integrated approach; where performance, composition and listening skills naturally come together. Each student in the classroom will be treated as musicians, no matter the background and previous experience. As they progress through the KS3 curriculum, students will have developed a greater understanding into the musical language as a whole, delving into four key areas; Cultural and Historical concepts, year to year keyboard skills progression, the process and skill set of composing music, and developing instrumental skills in both a solo and ensemble based context. As they come towards the end of the KS3 curriculum, it is our aim that students will have the skills and confidence necessary to transition effectively into KS4 Music, and for those who do not, students will have gained the tools necessary to help them engage in music on a deeper level in their everyday lives.

Performing and Expressive Arts at St Bede's and St Joseph’s have flourished in recent years and we are very proud of our students’ progress and results - some of the best in the College and indeed nationally. Music is part of the Hildegard of Bingen Learning Division which also includes Art, Photography, Drama, Dance, French and Spanish. We work as a strong, dynamic team of teachers who are committed, hardworking and passionate about the Arts. We are close-knit and supportive of one another and this provides a warm family feel. With a strong practical and theoretical emphasis, weencourage studentsfrom Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 5to recognise the importance of music and how itshapes the world in which we live.

At Key Stage 3, all students are taught musicin mixed ability groupsat the Ignis sitefor one lesson a week in our newly refurbished and equippedlarge, dedicatedmusic room. The room was fully converted in September 2023 and fitted with brand new Apple Mac computers, keyboards, guitars and ukeleles. Students work with Garage band and Sibelius.Plans to refurbish a second room are expected to take place this summer to complete the music suite. Students study a wide range of diverse musicians throughout Key stage 3 and develop their creative skillswithina calm and purposeful working atmosphere,whichmakes our subject area an ideal place to work. Most of our Arts staff are trained advisers for Bronze and Silver Arts Award, with three rained to teach Gold. All year 7studentscomplete part of their Bronze Arts Award qualification in music alongside Performing Arts.Additionally, the College has been awarded the Music Mark Award in recognition for our commitment to music education.

At Key Stages4 and 5, students follow the BTEC route with a small minority doing GCSE. Musicians are taught in a specialist music room on the Ardor site, which was refurbished in 2020, and is fully equipped with a range of instruments with 2 practice rooms to use when students need to rehearse in smaller groups. Students have access to Cubase, Sibelius and Soundtrap up at our Ardor site.

Extra curricular is a priority for our music department with regular ensembles being run by music staff and a range of visiting peripatetic instrumental staff. We have regular informal showcases to build up student confidence and the music department plays a valuable role in our annual whole College show, which was ‘Beauty and the Beast’ this year. It is an expectation that music staff will participate in the extra-curricular provision offered to students. Clubs include rock club, senior band, senior choir, drum club and singing club.

We are proud to be the host College for the fabulous Diocesan choirs who perform regularly on various BBC broadcasts as well as on tours abroad. Students have, in recent years, attended various workshops with high quality organisations and musicians such as Modulo Orchestras 4 All.

As part of our Catholic provision, students regularly engage in Catholic hymns for liturgies, so the ability to develop singing and the ability to accompany singing through confident keyboard skills would be an advantage in this role.
