We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to provide medical leadership to the South Gloucestershire Intensive Support Team (IST) based at Kingswood Civic Centre, Bristol.

The team operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week and consists of mental health workers with a broad range of skills and experience, working closely with service users who experience a severe mental health crisis. The aim of the team is to work closely and effectively with service users and families to formulate the causes of the difficulties, and to find the best ways for the service user to recover and stay well.

The team provide care and support at home and after discharge from hospital. They facilitate early discharge (FED) and provide gatekeeping to the inpatient wards.

This role is an opportunity to become part of an Intensive team in a well established locality based Mental health services. There are further exciting changes being implemented at Primary care under Community Mental Health Framework.

Main duties of the job

As the post holder you will work as part of, and provide medical advice to the Multi-Disciplinary Team. You will have medical responsibility for service users, with the support of a full time Specialty Doctor and a core trainee, where one is allocated.

You will undertake assessments, participate in formulations, review management plans including medical prescribing, contribute to risk assessments, implement home treatment and liaise with other teams in the locality and elsewhere.

You will promote patient centred reflective practice, supervise junior medical staff, hold a high visibility by attending Team MDTs and also attending SUIs , working with the inpatient teams for FEDs.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential


  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable


  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Eligibility

Essential


  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

Desirable


  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry

Experience

Essential


  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in a community setting.
  • Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement

Personal Skills

  • To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work

  • Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in Adults of working age and to deal with crisis situations.

  • Knowledge of alternatives to inpatient admission care approaches

Teaching

  • Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.

  • Experience as an Educational Supervisor for trainees

Research and Audit

  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project.
