About Sumo Digital, Newcastle

Located in the heart of the Northeast, Sumo Newcastle is a studio with a proven track record of delivering projects to a high standard, specialising in creating new IP with a focus on multi-player action games – including the 2021 release Hood: Outlaws & Legends. Our team is built around its own unique cultural fit, with a welcoming mix of industry veterans and up-and-coming stars.

Day in the life of a Lead Technical Artist:

As a Technical Artist, you're a key player in supporting and driving our art teams to deliver top-notch visuals. From creating tools to providing guidance on engines and platforms, you cover the whole art production scene.

Working closely with Art Leads, you'll help turn artistic visions into reality, keeping everything in sync with project needs. Your proactive problem-solving and creative skills tackle challenges, boosting the quality and efficiency of our art creation.

Leading in art optimization, you'll make decisions to keep visuals top-notch across platforms. Being the link between art and programming, you'll ensure a smooth blend of creativity and technical know-how. Your hands-on style involves creating and testing tools, along with sharing knowledge in our dynamic team.

By keeping the art team in the loop on technical constraints, you'll contribute to a shared understanding that guides our creative journey.

This role can be done either on a remote (within the UK), hybrid or in studio basis.

What you need to do this job:

• Experience of production level shader work and optimisation within Unreal Engine 4/5

• Strong understanding of the creation of shaders within Unreal Engine 4/5

• Experienced with blueprints and their implementation

• Knowledge of platform strengths and limitations

• Experience with performance profiling tools such as PIX/Razor/In-Engine tools etc.

• High levels of attention to detail

• Familiarity working and developing in a multi-platform, multi-project environment.

• Experience with other programs such as Substance Painter / Designer. Zbrush etc

The Interview Process:

At Sumo Digital we take a holistic and engaging interview process that allows us to get to know you, your skills and your potential. For the Lead Technical Artist role we have a two stage interview process:

1st Stage:  One hour technical interview with our very own Head of Art along with two other technical members of the team, here we will talk with you about your experience, our expectations in the role and ask some competency based questions. There will of course also be opportunities for you to ask questions

2nd Stage:  Our second stage is up to 2 separate interviews completed in the same day, either onsite or online. These interviews not only test your technical capability to perform the role, but also gives you the chance to meet some of the talented people that you would be working closely with on an informal basis
