We provide excellent anesthetic care in a team model for diverse surgery including big vascular, ortho, general, OB, and pain management. South Shore Hospital is a Level 2 Trauma center and delivers world-class quality care through both our South Shore Health physician groups and through agreements with Boston's teaching hospitals including surgeons from Brigham and Women's Hospital, pediatricians from Boston Children's Hospital, and Oncologic services through Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Our Nurse Anesthetists are valued members of the interprofessional care team, utilizing the full extent of their skills and training. We are looking for well trained, enthusiastic, collegial, team-players to join our growing dynamic hospital-based practice. Ideally you are someone who enjoys doing your own procedures and practicing with autonomy in a patient centered collaborative environment. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are advanced practice nurses responsible for administering anesthesia and monitoring patients during surgeries and other medical procedures. Due to their specialized skill set, they are experts in critical care and airway management.

Job Description

  • Provides pre-anesthetic preparation and patient evaluation.
  • Ensures patient identification and obtains appropriate health history.
  • Recommends, requests, and evaluates pertinent diagnostic studies.
  • Documents pre-anesthetic evaluation.
  • Obtains informed consent for anesthesia.
  • Selects prepares and administers anesthetic agents or other agents administered in management of anesthetic care.
  • Informs anesthesiologist and/or surgeon of changes in patient’s condition.
  • Provides anesthesia induction, maintenance, emergence, and post anesthesia care.
  • Inserts invasive line catheter/devices.
  • Performs tracheal intubation and extubation, airway management.
  • Provides mechanical ventilation.
  • Performs venous and arterial punctures.
  • Obtains blood samples. Performs and manages regional anesthetic.
  • Manages patient’s fluid, blood, electrolyte and acid base balance.
  • Provides perianesthetic invasive and non-invasive monitoring utilizing current standards and techniques.
  • Recognizes and treats cardiac dysrhythmias through use of perianesthetic electrocardiogram monitoring.
  • Evaluates patient response during emergence from anesthesia. Institutes pharmacological or supportive treatment to insure adequacy of patient recovery from anesthesia and adjuvant drugs.
  • Provides post anesthesia follow-up, report, and evaluation of patient’s response to anesthesia and for potential anesthetic complication.
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment and notifies supervisor of needed equipment adjustments/repairs.
  • May perform patient care to the extent necessary to maintain clinical expertise, competency and licensing necessary to fulfill job responsibilities and to direct the provision of care on the unit.

Requirements

  • Skilled in airway management techniques and chronic pain management.
  • Must possess superb communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid understanding of current anesthesia practices and techniques.
  • Strong patient assessment skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in oral communication, written communication, interpersonal relations, customer service, adaptability, and change management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing PC applications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or relevant undergraduate degree.

    Graduate of accredited nurse anesthesia program
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a CRNA in an acute setting.
  • RN License required
  • V alid state APRN Recognition preferred
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) required
