Position: General Commercial Lawyer

Location: Oxford

Role Overview:

As an experienced, qualified lawyer, you will play a pivotal role in our General Commercial Legal Team, addressing a diverse range of legal matters impacting higher education. Working under the general supervision of the Head of General Commercial, you will provide expert advice on allocated cases, contributing to the success of the University's academic and income generation activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft and negotiate contracts within the General Commercial legal team's scope.
  • Advise on a broad spectrum of commercial matters to support academic and income-generation initiatives.
  • Stay abreast of legal developments, disseminating key information to relevant staff.
  • Organize and deliver training within your expertise, supporting colleagues and internal client groups.
  • Collaborate with the team to propose and formulate precedent agreements.
  • Advise on early-stage disputes and undertake any other tasks appropriate to the role.

Daily Engagement:

Forge strong relationships with various University functions, including the Purchasing Office, Finance Team, Departments, Divisions, Museums, and Libraries.

Selection Criteria: Essential

  1. Qualified solicitor or barrister admitted to practice in England and Wales with substantial experience in handling a diverse commercial caseload.
  2. Clear articulation of legal principles and concepts in both written and oral communication.
  3. Flexible, imaginative, and adept at identifying creative and practical solutions to complex problems.
  4. Pragmatic with a solution-focused approach.
  5. Excellent communicator, inspiring confidence and understanding in technically detailed scenarios.
  6. Ability to manage a varied and time-pressured workload independently while actively participating in a collaborative team environment.
  7. Providing training support and briefings to internal client groups.
  8. Willingness to undertake duties appropriate to the grade of the post.

Desirable:

  1. Some experience in an in-house legal environment.
  2. Knowledge of the higher education field.
