An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Cancer Project Manager to join our Cancer Services Team, within the Corporate Division of Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.

The Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance (CMCA) leads the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan ambitions for cancer across our local system through collaboration with partners with the aim of improving outcomes for patients and improving performance against key operational standards.

The Cancer Project Manager for Wirral University Teaching Hospital will provide leadership and high level project management skills to enable system wide change to support implementation of Rapid Diagnostic Services (RDS) delivery across the organisation in line with priorities identified within NHS England's Long Term Plan.

The Cancer Project Manager is a senior leadership role. The role will require extensive project management skills/experience and close working with external partners (including providers, commissioners, patients and carers) to deliver programme objectives in accordance with the aims and ambitions of the Trust and the CMCA. This requires a level of political awareness, personal influence and skill.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be pivotal to the communication and progress reporting regarding RDS to the CMCA. The post holder will work with colleagues at all levels including senior clinicians, executives, project managers and teams across Wirral University Teaching Hospital and CMCA and act in an autonomous capacity.

The Cancer Project Manager will be responsible for scoping compliance, identifying priority areas and the development, management and implementation of key RDS projects across the organisation. The post holder will have experience of managing projects involving clinicians and a track record of successful engagement with leaders. In addition to the ability to lead transformation a background in cancer care and a motivation to develop and implement effective change is essential to the role.

Qualifications, Specific Experience and Training

Essential


  • Masters level qualification or equivalent management experience
  • Project management qualification (Prince 2 or equivalent)
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable


  • Recognised management qualification
  • Experience of working in an acute trust
  • Acute NHS and cancer specific experience
  • Experience of managing complex change projects across organisational boundaries

Knowledge and Skills

Essential


  • Knowledge and experience of project management within an acute setting and change management
  • Ability to prepare high quality written reports for senior internal and external audiences
  • Effectively utilise a range of IT office systems including MS Project, PowerPoint, Word, spreadsheets and web browser technologies

Desirable


  • Working knowledge of Cancer Somerset Register
  • Knowledge and experience of line management e.g. recruitment, development, appraisal and HR processes

  • Extensive experience of managing improvements and projects in the NHS environment engaging clinical staff, patients and other key stakeholders in collaborative projects
  • Experience of developing systems to allow reporting against project milestones and benefits
  • Strong track record of multi-professional working and developing and fostering professional working relationships
  • Ability to challenge stakeholders about delivery and to hold to account where project targets have not been met

Desirable


  • Experience of supporting others to lead complex change projects including coaching and mentoring
  • Experience of managing significant change and developing services in difficult or sensitive environments, involving situations of conflict

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the national cancer policy agenda and the opportunities for improvement
  • Knowledge of strategic challenges currently facing secondary care and how this impacts upon project delivery
  • Knowledge of secondary care cancer services, organisational structures and procedures
