Senior Pharmacy Technician - EPMA (Trust Wide role) Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust

We have successfully rolled out EPMA to our inpatient teams and are about to embark on our community roll out phase. We have a technician in post in Durham & Darlington and North Yorkshire and are ideally looking for at least one technician to be based at Roseberry Park in Middlesbrough, please ring to discuss in more detail.

You will be joining a team of EPMA technicians based in each locality of the Trust supporting community teams when they go live with EPMA. Whilst the majority of the EPMA role will be delivered mon-fri 9-5.

Main duties of the job

What is the role of Senior Pharmacy technician to support the implementation EPMA?

Preparation for roll out:

  • Help build drug catalogue including formulary and clinical decision support (e.g. allergy, interaction, dose checking)
  • Help test system and fix bugs
  • Understand current medicines processes 'AS IS' and agree new ways of working with the EPMA system 'To BE'
  • Develop training for EPMA
  • Support pilot EPMA in community areas

During roll out : Work with the community teams to demonstrate the system and support new ways of working within the teams.

On day of go live be with the team to support prescribers by accuracy checking new e-prescription and support nurses with interpreting the new depot charts and prescriptions.

Days following go live support community and pharmacy staff using EPMA and iron out any problems.

Alongside the EPMA project work you will also be working with our pharmacy team to provide pharmacy services across a range of Mental Health services.

About us

These are exciting times in Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHSFT as we start the process of launching EPMA across the community teams. We have received funding to expand our team of Pharmacy Technicians working alongside an EPMA pharmacist and the existing EPMA project team to implement across our community teams in Teesside, North Yorkshire and York and County Durham and Darlington. If you are pharmacy technician experienced or interested in mental health this could be the post for you as we transform our IT systems to improve patient safety. This will be a mixed role, working to help build the EPMA system within our Trust, develop training materials and then to support the roll out of EPMA to clinical areas. While working as part of the EPMA project team there will be clear links to our inpatient and dispensary teams based in Middlesbrough, York and Darlington; plus inpatient pharmacy teams based in Durham and Scarborough, as well as to the wider Trust.

We have a vacant full time band 5 senior pharmacy technician post for approximately 9 months, operating Trust wide with their base at one of our main sites; ideally Roseberry Park Middlesbrough but could also be Foss Park York or Westpark Darlington. Job responsibilities

This is a split post where the post-holder will support the implementation of Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) within an agreed locality or service; and deliver the technical clinical pharmacy service across a cohort of inpatients

To work with the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) team and EPMA pharmacy leads to test and develop, implement and evaluate EPMA across the trust. Support the Lead Pharmacy Technician for IT and Senior Clinical Pharmacist EPMA to configure the drug formulary, clinical decision support and clinical processes and rules. As part of the EPR team develop EPMA processes and training Provide training and support to the users, in a clinical area, (nurses, doctors, pharmacy team) before, during and post-go live of EPMA.

During the go live phase of the EPMA project it will be expected that the successful candidate will travel to different sites across the whole of the Trust.

To be able to competently dispense an array of medication from a variety of order forms. To be responsible for a range of technical duties in the dispensaries to aid in the smooth and efficient running of the department. To work together with the other pharmacy colleagues, in the dispensaries and wards, to provide patients with an accurate and timely supply of medication from admission through to discharge. To deliver the technical clinical pharmacy service and promote medicines optimisation across a variety of specialties and localities, under the direction of the Lead Technicians. To work with professional staff, patients and carers in the provision of a clinical pharmacy service in their designated area under the supervision of a clinical pharmacist, to ensure high quality patient focused pharmaceutical care. To support the Lead Technician and be involved in pharmacy services developments as needs or opportunities arise. To promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions and learning disabilities. To promote at all times a positive image of both the Pharmacy department and profession and the wider Trust.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • NVQ level 3 with BTEC underpinning knowledge in pharmaceutical sciences or equivalent
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Accredited National Medicines management course (modules 1-3) or regional equivalent. or willingness to work towards
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
  • NVQ D32/33 or A1 assessor award
