Job Overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic Consultant Gastroenterologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services. The successful candidate will join a friendly and progressive team of Gastroenterologists and will be encouraged to develop a sub-speciality interest to complement the existing team and to support further development of the service.

We currently have 8 substantive consultants and 1 locum consultant and are supported by:

  • 2 Gastroenterology specialist trainees
  • 1 Trust grade
  • 2 senior clinical fellows
  • 8 doctors at FY1/FY2/CF and GPVTS level
A team of Specialist Nurses includes:
  • 3 IBD nurses
  • 3 liver nurses
  • 3 alcohol nurses
  • 2 upper GI/HPB cancer nurses
  • 1 nutrition nurse
There are 4 Clinical Endoscopists who provide a trans nasal endoscopy service and support endoscopy training of our Registrars. Additionally, there is 1 Gastroenterology dietitian.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust collaborates closely with The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, is a member of the Black Country ICS, and has close links with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Main Duties of the Job

Key Responsibilities of the Post:
  • Take responsibility for patients under your care.
  • Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialities within the Trust and Primary Care.
  • Participate in the development of the gastroenterology service, treatment protocols and guidelines, and the greater knowledge in the management of gastroenterology conditions.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
  • Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the speciality.
  • Demonstrate involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management, and Clinical Audit.
  • Ensure own practice is up to date, including responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and Appraisal.
  • Participate in the GI bleed OOH rota.
  • Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
There is no General Medicine on-call component to this job.

Personal Circumstances
  • Full GMC Registration and Licensable to Practice
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to travel throughout the borough during the working day
  • Appropriate Immigration Status
Clinical Experience
  • Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Gastroenterology (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
  • Must possess a wide experience in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine at senior level
  • Independent in therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
Clinical Effectiveness
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit/QI project
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making
Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff/students and other disciplines
  • An understanding of the current NHS environment
  • Evidence of research experience & published work
Essential Qualifications
  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology
  • JAG accreditation for diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy and for independent colonoscopy
  • Current ALS qualification, i.e. within the last 3 years or requirement to obtain within 3 months of appointment
