Overview

Element has an opportunity for a Senior Chemist for method development, training, testing, sample preparation and preparation of test reports.
Element Teesside Chemistry specialises in the chemical analysis of metal alloys to ISO 17025 and NADCAP requirements using a wide variety of techniques including ICP-MS, ICP-OES, OES, XRF and gas techniques such as combustion and fusion.
The laboratory also carry out powder characterisation tests such as particle size distribution, sieve analysis, flow rate, apparent density and tap density.

Responsibilities

• Booking of work into the Laboratory Management Information based computer System (LIMS) and liaising with customers regarding technical and status queries to testing activities

• Preparation of samples, prior to analysis, by microwave dissolution and polishing / linishing / sawing
• Performing duties in accordance with Element's internal quality system and health & safety procedures and the reviewing of technical standards and updating of internal procedures.
• Undertaking chemical analysis of metal alloys using a wide variety of laboratory equipment including ICP-MS, ICP-OES, OES, XRF, gas techniques such as combustion & fusion
• Undertaking powder characterisation tests such as particle size distribution, sieve analysis, flow rate, apparent density and tap density.
• Ensuring that equipment maintenance, routine calibrations and quality control checks are performed on time and in accordance with documented procedures
• Ability to carry out method development to improve current calibrations, to develop new tests according to customer specifications and industry requirements. The validation of procedures and techniques and the ability to train less experienced members of staff
• Reviewing and authorising test certificates and reports within the Laboratory Management Information based computer System (LIMS) to ensure that they are accurate, factually correct and comply with the regulator and test standard requirements
• Contributing to the improvement in the organisation and efficiency of the workplace by implementing agreed continuous improvement ideas

Skills / Qualifications As a successful candidate you will be educated to a good standard in English, Mathematics and Science with a qualification in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or other related science subject being preferable You will have previous experience of working within a busy laboratory environment and have a sound relevant scientific background You will be computer literate, including being proficient in MS Office packages such as Word and Excel Ideally you will have extensive knowledge of the relevant instrumental techniques and have previous experience of carrying out method development. A sound knowledge of quality systems such as UKAS and Nadcap is beneficial but not essential We are looking for a pro-active and self-motivated individual, a team player who can work both under supervision and independently to high standards and tight deadlines You will be required to prioritise and coordinate a busy workload; therefore, good organisational and time management skills are essential to work in a fast paced environment You will demonstrate strong attention to detail, analytical skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills
