Direct Reports: 2 (Academy Operations Manager and Coaching & Competitor Development Manager

This role will have overall responsibility for the design, implementation and delivery of all aspects of the talent development, performance, coaching and competitor development programmes.
The Head of Competitor Development will manage, co-ordinate and drive talent, performance and development within, and alongside, the Motorsport UK Academy and new ‘Developing Driver Programme’ as well as oversee the development and integration of a Coach education pathway and accreditation framework.

Overall responsibility for the talent pathway, coaching and wider competitor development including the development, evolution, integration and delivery of a competitor development strategy.
Liaise with colleagues, organisations and experts in talent, performance and sport development from: key funding partners, successful motorsport nations, and other sports to understand existing pathway systems and the programmes that underpin them, their effectiveness and development needs; and agree key components and requirements of an effective development pathway.
Manage and lead the Academy and Coaching programme consultants/contractors, practitioners and studentships (PhD) to ensure strategic outcomes are delivered.
Overall responsibility for the management and monitoring of the competitor development budget.
Responsibility for external partnerships ensuring both parties are fulfilling the obligations arising from their agreement and the needs of the competitor development programmes.
Establishing, delivering and reporting on short and long term KPIs.
Overview of Communication and Marketing priorities within the context of competitor development.

Academy
Design, implement and lead a talent and performance strategy, reviewing the overall effectiveness of the Motorsport UK Academy and bringing new ideas to the positioning of the programmes to bring maximum value to the competitors progressing through it.
Lead on the relationship between Motorsport UK, Sport England and Loughborough College in relation to the delivery of the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE).
Lead on the provision and availability of support services (sport psychology, human performance, nutrition etc.) and work with experts to embed a progressive curriculum of content across all programmes.
Lead on FIA talent programmes (such as FIA Karting Academy Trophy, Rally Star, Rising Stars, Motorsport Games) and provide opportunities for talent identification at both national and international levels.
Undertake innovative specialist projects to fill critical talent gaps identified in the talent/performance pipeline and/or create strategies that may accelerate movement through pathway, eg talent transfer, cross sport opportunities, leadership development.
Create monitoring and review processes for drivers/co-drivers performances and individual development plans.
Oversee the talent development provision more broadly for example, supporting junior level championships to enhance the potential to progress through the sport.
Where required/identified facilitate discrete research projects that provide a greater evidenced base to understanding Talent Identification markers and patterns of performance development in motorsport.
Oversee a national tracking and monitoring system that allows a driver/co-drivers individual progression to be objectively quantified against a winning trajectory.
Ensure alignment of a competitor talent ID process across the competitor’s pathway with a consistent selection criteria and policy.

Coaching
Drive the development of a coaching pathway and culture within the competitor pathway structure, working towards the target of coaching being at the heart of motorsport at every level from grassroots through to elite.
Oversee the coach development strategy which considers the future sustainability of the motorsport coaching workforce and ensures all competitors have access to suitably qualified coaches at the right time of their development.
Working with colleagues, support the integration of Motorsport UK led coaching education and provision engaging with Association schools (ARDS, ARKS, BARS) to review and complement the existing infrastructure.
Oversee the process of Motorsport UK becoming a 1st4Sport recognised centre in order to bring the Certificate in Coaching Motorsport qualification into an ‘internal’ delivery model.
Work to ensure the programmes are financially sustainable long term and plan the commercial viability of further qualification levels and CPD offers.
Work with the Commercial Team to source further partners for the programme and bring further benefits for qualified coaches to remain engaged with the pathway.

Competitor Development
Oversee the design and implementation of the new ‘Developing Driver Programme’ – ensuring that enjoyment is at the core of the participant development offers.
Overall responsibility for talent inclusion and participation projects and other EDI initiatives identified as a result of research and review of motorsport’s new and existing participant base.
Build and oversee effective relationships with key external partners, such as association schools, championships, teams, regions, and clubs.
Lead and support the creation and development of a clear framework centralised to the sport that clearly articulates the guiding principles of developing drivers/co-drivers.
Liaise with colleagues, experts, and partners to develop a range of resources, training aids and tools to support competitors, ensuring a holistic approach to the development of competitors and coaches is promoted.

Graduate or graduate level in a relevant field. Additional post graduate qualification or relevant experience preferable.
Relevant coaching qualifications desirable

Significant experience and expertise in performance and talent development within the sports sector
Experience of managing relationships and programmes in a sports performance, talent and coaching environment
Experience and knowledge in coach development and sports development
Evidence of ability to seek out new knowledge and expertise to positively influence innovative and world-leading performance, talent and coach development programmes
An understanding of sports development, coaching and talent development and performance in the UK and international and / or motorsport would be advantageous
Be able to work strategically without close supervision
An understanding of sponsorship and commercial relationships in sport desirable
A committed and loyal individual, prepared to work the necessary hours and at weekends
