Hours: 8.30am 4.30pm (Term Time Only)

Our inspiring SEMH school, located in Brent, is looking to recruit a dedicated and experienced HLTA to join their small and friendly, dynamic team. The school aims for every child to realise and achieve their true potential with the right support, through their nurturing approach to teaching and learning. Their goal is to inspire pupils to achieve beyond their perceived capabilities. All staff are trained to have a therapeutic disposition, paired with 1:1 and group support from on site therapists.

As a HLTA, you will be supporting students aged 5 - 11 with social, emotional. and mental health needs, who for a variety of reasons, may find mainstream education inaccessible. This may be due to:

  • ADHD
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Attachment difficulties
  • Autism (including PDA - Pathological Demand Avoidance)
  • Family challenges that impact a childs learning and ability to feel good at school
  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
  • School refusal
  • Social Communication Issues
  • Traumatic incidences that may make school engagement very challenging

As a HLTA, you will work closely with the class teacher to help students to grow and develop, both in terms of academic and social progress, using an engaging, hands on and nurturing approach. Its a fantastic role with huge potential for a caring and driven SEMH HLTA, who has a passion for making a difference daily.

It is essential for our HLTAs to cover some lessons and also offer support, both academically and in addressing behaviour, social and emotional needs. Therefore, we are seeking a flexible, adaptable and reliable individual who is hard working and passionate in making a difference in the lives of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and delivering tailored learning activities that cater to the diverse needs of our students
  • Provide one-to-one or small group support to students to enhance their academic progress and social development.
  • Collaborate with teachers to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued and supported.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies effectively to promote positive behaviour and engagement in learning.
  • Use areas of expertise to plan and deliver learning activities and resources, and plan their role in learning activities.
  • Lead class teaching (with appropriate support) as and when appropriate (e.g. teacher absence / CPD / PPA cover).
  • Use and apply effective teaching and learning strategies, supporting all pupils to participate in learning activities.
  • Use specialist knowledge and skills to support the learning of individual pupils or small groups of children across KS1 and KS2.
  • Contribute to the planning and evaluation and improvement of teaching and learning activities, sharing appropriate ideas, offering constructive suggestions, and giving feedback where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the assessment and monitoring of student progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents/guardians as necessary.
  • To assist with planning, writing, organising, implementing and monitoring pupil plans (including attendance), reviewing and implementing interventions enabling pupils to understand and meet their targets. Contribute to reviews
  • Support the delivery of interventions and therapeutic activities to address SEMH needs.
  • Act as a positive role model for students, promoting resilience, self-esteem, and emotional well-being.

Key Requirements:

  • Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience working with students with SEMH or Special Educational Needs (SEN)
  • Strong understanding of SEMH issues and strategies for supporting students with diverse needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians.
  • Flexibility, patience, and resilience in working with challenging behaviours and SEMH.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
  • Very good understanding of de-escalation and behavioural support strategies, and how to respond to different needs.
  • Understanding of effective teaching methods, Able to understand and recognise desired outcomes of lesson plans.
  • A good understanding of the National Curriculum and how this is applied.
  • Experience supporting teachers to provide high quality learning in line with school curriculum
  • Experience planning, creating and delivering quality learning activities and resources
  • Experience covering and leading class teaching (with appropriate support).
