Radiotherapy Technology Specialist (XR07)
Wehave an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated person to leadour mechanical engineering team in Radiotherapy Technology Services (RTS) atBexley Wing, St. James's Hospital, Leeds .
Workingcollaboratively with clinical and scientific staff, you will be supportingthe clinical radiotherapy service to treat patients though the safe andeffective repair and maintenance of medical equipment including 12 ElektaVersaHD linacs, 3 Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT Simulators, a Flexitronremote afterloading unit, Gamma Knife ICON, and MR simulator.
Inaddition to this wide variety of equipment, your creativity and experience inmanaging medical devices will serve you well as you work closely with theadvanced practitioner and join our multidisciplinary project teams in a leadrole to provide mechanical engineering expertise in the design anddevelopment of novel medical and non-medical devices to solve the uniquechallenges faced in delivering high quality care in radiotherapy and beyond.
Ensuring that design, development, manufacture, and modification of deviceswithin the section are carried out within the relevant quality andlegislative frameworks.
-Collaborating with technologists, clinical, and scientific staff to supportthe implementation of innovative engineering solutions to support thecontinuous improvement of oncology services.
-Allocating resource to service requests and projects.
-Training others in equipment management and mechanical engineering skills foruse in a healthcare science environment.
Thepost holder will provide project management and technical leadership skillsthough the demonstration of a high level of understanding of Medical DevicesRegulations, the application of risk management to medical devices, andmanaging the risk associated with bringing custom-made treatment devices intoclinical use.
RadiotherapyTechnology Services (RTS) is a group within the Radiotherapy Physics sectionof the Department of Medical Physics and Engineering at the Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust. RTS staffcollaborate with clinical and scientific users of radiotherapy equipment toprovide equipment management and related technical services.
Clinical Computing, Electronics, Mechanical Engineeringand Technical Services, collaborate to carry out activity inmultidisciplinary workgroups.

Thejobholder plays a vital role in managing and providing technical support forradiotherapy equipment using specialist knowledge of mechanical engineeringand device design and development, often leading teams and making high-impactdecisions independently. They oversee complex and high-value medicalequipment, with a focus on quality assurance and clinical risk management.
Thesuccessful applicant will have substantial experience working in a medicalengineering environment backed up with formal clinical technology training.Unregisteredapplicants may be appointed under trainee pay arrangements until registrationhas been achieved.
Assist in the management and coordination of technical activity carried outon a broad range of complex radiotherapy equipment throughout the equipmentslifecycle.
-Lead teams of staff formed on an ad-hoc basis for major medical equipmentwork or internal project work.
-Produce and update procedures that are relevant to their own area ofexpertise to maintain the RTS ISO 9001:2015 quality management system.
-Ensure that Trust policies and safe working practices are followed bythemselves and any personnel who may come under their control.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Trust staffincluding those involved with radiotherapy treatment and other relevantprofessional groups.
Advanced knowledge of radiotherapy technology including linear accelerators,scanners, and radiotherapy simulators.
-Detailed understanding of medical equipment management principles.
-Advanced understanding of RTS procedures, ISO standards, and Medical DeviceRegulations.
-Clinical& Scientific Support:
-Communicate complex technical information to a range of staff groups withinthe radiotherapy department and external equipment manufacturers,contractors, and other personnel.
Relevant degree in Engineering, Healthcare Science, Clinical Technology /Engineering, or equivalent level of knowledge.
Formal leadership or management training
Specialist medical technical training courses
Accredited UKAS ISO 9001 and UKAS ISO 13485 training courses
Evidence of fault analysis, diagnosis & repair skills for complex equipment including linear accelerators, therapy units, radiotherapy simulators, and CT scanners
Highly developed engineering skills with advanced workmanship standards and skills in design & development, including CAD skills.
Experience and detailed understanding of medical equipment management principles and medical device manufacture & modification procedures
A high level of understanding of quality assurance and quality management principles
Advanced knowledge and understanding of risks arising from equipment failure, misinterpretation of technical information and the implications for the manufacture of medical devices.
Knowledge and understanding of the radiotherapy treatment planning and treatment delivery processes
Other criteria (optional) eg practical skills or Additional Requirements Ability to move medium/heavy objects and skills in the use of lifting equipment to shift and accurately locate very heavy objects
