London, United Kingdom PRI Association Full time

15 May 2024

  • LOCATION: Hybrid · London, UK
    OR Euro Zone
  • BASIS: Full-time permanent (Minimum 2 Days per week in the office)
  • CLOSING DATE:  8:00pm, 2nd Jun 2024 BST
Job Description

The Specialist will join the PRI’s Sustainable Financial System (SFS) team which is based in London and the Euro Zone and will report to the Manager in the team. The successful candidate will lead on and/or contribute to a range of stewardship projects within the PRI’s SFS team that are linked to the PRI’s Active Ownership 2.0 programme. Active Ownership 2.0 aims to encourage PRI signatories to focus their stewardship on the achievement of real-world outcomes, to ensure the prioritisation of systemic sustainability issues and to collaborate with their fellow PRI signatories to achieve progress.

The role will be focused on driving change across the investment industry. It would therefore suit a highly motivated individual with a diverse set of skills and experience who shares a vision for more effective stewardship; and for progress on key societal issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality and corruption. This role involves thought leadership on current and emerging issues in stewardship. As such, the exact nature of the tasks is likely to be diverse and varied, however as a guide, the successful candidate can expect to cover areas such as:

  • Systemic stewardship / ‘beta activism’.
  • Stewardship resourcing practices in the investment industry.
  • The role of stakeholders in driving stewardship best practice, including but not limited to asset owners, asset managers and service providers such as proxy advisers.
  • The role of stewardship and stewardship best practice in asset classes beyond listed equity.
Core Responsibilities
  • Support the Manager, SFS team and Director, Sustainable Systems in delivering against the team’s business plan and budget.
  • Use a wide range of skills and relationships to drive a shift to an outcomes-based and systemically-focused approach to stewardship amongst the PRI signatory base. This will include working with internal colleagues and managing the PRI’s Stewardship Advisory Committee to develop and finesse project ideas and/or thought leadership pieces.
  • Develop thought leadership on leading stewardship practices in diverse asset classes and support its internal and external dissemination, including through building investor communities of practice in different areas of investor stewardship.
  • Support or participate in public speaking at events, both online and in person, on stewardship and the PRI’s work more generally, and contribute to other external communications relevant to the team.
  • Contribute to work programmes designed to ensure the PRI’s leadership, reporting and assessment and minimum standards are aligning with the desired changes in industry stewardship practice across asset classes.
  • Provide regular reporting to the Director, Sustainable Systems and the Chief Sustainable Systems Officer as required.
  • Respond to and input into ad hoc requests from internal and external networks on stewardship-related matters.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to more junior members of the team, including sharing technical knowledge and expertise where appropriate.
Person Specification
  • Good understanding of the PRI and the investment sector, including ESG / responsible investment, is essential.
  • Previous experience in a stewardship role, such as for an asset manager or asset owner, service provider (or other financial sector facing role) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clear, concise and engaging content in English and comfortable with presenting to an internal or external audience.
  • Strong project management skills with experience delivering complex projects successfully, including directing others that may not be direct reports.
  • Able to demonstrate a collaborative, inclusive and consultative approach to working with others, building strong and productive relationships (including at senior level), and a commitment to developing others.
  • Able to demonstrate a growth mindset, actively pursuing continuous professional and personal development.
  • IT/digital skills (such as Microsoft Office, Salesforce, social media, webcasts etc) are essential.
  • Experience working in asset classes beyond listed equity and/or exposure to various geographies e.g. covering EU, US and UK markets and key emerging markets is desirable.
  • As this is a global role, international travel may be required, as well as flexibility to occasionally attend calls or meetings outside regular business hours to accommodate other time zones.

We particularly welcome candidates from under-represented groups, including Black, Asian, and other People of Colour, those with visible or non-visible disabilities, LGBTQ+ candidates and those who are neurodivergent.

The PRI is committed to offering flexibility to our employees, both formal (e.g. part-time work) and informal (e.g. a shift in hours to accommodate caring responsibilities). Please talk to us about how we could make this role flexible for you.

N.B. We reserve the right to close a vacancy before the closing date in the event of an overwhelming response or a change in business priorities.
