The government has announced new funding to support current smokers to quit smoking, with £70 million additional funding per year for local authority-led stop smoking services (SSS) and support.

West Sussex County Council Public Health (WSCC PH) will be receiving approximately £1.075 million for 2024/25, ring-fenced for smoking cessation. Although the exact amount for each subsequent year is yet to be determined, this funding is expected to continue until 2028/29.

The Opportunity

Salary: £30,296 to £33,024 per annum

Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week

Location: Northleigh , County Hall, Chichester and hybrid working from home

Do you have extensive project management experience? Able to work accurately and proactively to deliver high quality projects? We are currently seeking a Public Health Programme Support Officer to join our Smoking Cessation Team.

As the Public Health Programme Support Officer, you will be a key member of the Tobacco and Smoking Cessation Team, dealing with a complex range of issues in a fast-paced environment. This will include working on a range of projects to support the delivery of the tobacco control agenda and of the Local Stop Smoking Services and to support grant ambitions and targets, for example, commissioning, business planning, communications campaigns, pathway development and stakeholder engagement.

The role will often include providing time-limited input to the implementation of a new work stream, or to phase out existing projects under supervision. This work will often involve aspects of project managing the implementation of evidence-based interventions including liaising with stakeholders, drafting of service specifications and ensuring documents are drawn up and monitoring systems for reporting them are in place.

What are we looking for?

In order to be our successful Programme Support Officer, you will:

  • Be able to work quickly, accurately and proactively to deliver high quality project management support to the Public Health Lead for Tobacco Control and the Advanced Public Health Practitioner for the smoking cessation programme, across a variety of tobacco and smoking topics.
  • Be required to analyse varied and complex information and statistics, so focus and attention to detail are requisite.
  • Be expected to use your initiative to make informed decisions when unanticipated problems are presented, for example producing recommendations which may be amended by a senior manager.
  • Ensure that matters are dealt with efficiently and appropriately, prioritising your workload in order to respond.

At times, you may be dealing with highly sensitive matters and confidentiality will be essential.
