Purpose of Job/Key objectives
The Modern Languages Department is well established within the school and consists of 9 members of staff, 4 of whom are native speakers.
Lewes Old Grammar School is unusual in that all pupils in Year 7 are taught French, German and Spanish. As pupils progress through the school, about half of pupils continue with all three languages in Y8 and Y9 and the other half concentrates on two in any combination. At GCSE a small number of pupils opt to study all three with a larger number opting for two. Our results are consistently very good. The students follow the EDEXCEL syllabus both at GCSE and at A level, but we will be starting to deliver the EDEXCEL IGCSE qualification this coming academic year to our Y10 students. In the past the majority of our A Level students have chosen to continue to study the language at university, sometimes as a single subject and sometimes with joint honors.
The Department has six teaching rooms and is well resourced; with interactive screens, projectors and digital technology to record/practice speaking. The Department subscribes to active learn, boost, sentence builders and other language sites.
Principal Duties/Tasks and responsibilities
- Be a reliable member of the team, working co-operatively and with flexibility.
- Contribute regularly to the MFL resource bank.
- Assist the MFL team in ensuring the safety, security and well-being of all children.
- Observe and regularly assess children’s progress and report on achievements looking for progression and continuity.
- Maintain objective, accurate and up-to-date records that identify the children’s individual needs, abilities & progress & use these as a focus for future planning.
- Plan & organise activities & opportunities that extend learning.
- Attend regular staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- Attend regular parent meetings as required.
- Be familiar with all emergency and security procedures.
- Undertake a shared responsibility for health, safety, hygiene and cleanliness throughout the setting.
- Adhere to the schools setting policies.

Interviews
Candidates will be invited to attend an interview at the School and to meet the Headmaster and Assistant Heads as well as the Head of Spanish/MFL and the department.
Candidates will be asked to teach a lesson and bring a sample of self made resources as part of the selection process. Further details will be available from the Head of Modern Languages.
