We are currently looking for an Applications Technical Architect to join our Technical Team.

Key Purpose

As the technical lead in the Applications space, you will be seen as a trusted advisor by the wider business and you will be responsible for ensuring that all solutions are utilising industry best practice technologies, and robust development practices are followed to ensure that projects are delivered on time, in full, in budget and in line with business needs as the Ricardo Applications CoE transforms to adopt a more Agile development lifecycle.

The successfulcandidate will be responsible for driving the technical strategy, making sure the CoE is delivering on its 5-year plan to adopt IaaS, SaaS and PaaS solutions where-ever appropriate. Keeping abreast of the latest changes across the technology landscape, you will be looking for opportunities to standardise the CoE offerings to ensure that we remain capable of responding quickly to business change whilst also ensuring that we are getting the maximum return available from our investments.

Working with technical analysts and the wider IT group, you will spend a portion of your time ensuring that our existing platforms are resilient and delivering the performance we expect. You will also be responsible for engaging with vendors as required to ensure that issues are resolved in a timely manner.

Structure and reporting relationship

Member of IT Applications Senior team, along with other Senior Finance Support Analyst and PLM Global Architect.

Line manager to Application Managers, Application Tier 2 Supports and Application Support Specialists

Key accountabilities:

  • Architectural Design
    Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand application requirements and design scalable efficient and secure technical solutions that align with the business strategic goals.
  • Solution Development
    Lead the development and implementation of application solutions, utilising your in-depth knowledge of software development methodologies, best practises and emerging technologies.
  • Technical Leadership
    Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the development team, ensuring adherence to architectural standards, coding practises, and quality standards throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Application Integration
    Design and oversee the integration of applications with existing systems and third-party platforms, ensuring seamless data flow and interoperability.
  • Performance Optimisation
    Identify potential performance bottlenecks, conduct performance analysis, and recommend optimisations to ensure optimal application performance and scalability.
  • Tools
    Evaluate and select appropriate software development tools, platforms and methodologies to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Risk Assessments
    Assess and mitigate technical risks associated with application development, including security vulnerabilities, data integrity and system reliability.
  • Commercial
    Assess and understand the impact of technical decisions on product pricing, licensing and overall profitability.
  • Documentation & Communication
    Prepare and maintain documentation, including design specs, technical diagrams and system documentation. Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Research and Innovation
    Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practises related to application development, and recommend potential adoption strategies.

Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • Hold, or be in prepared to work towards, TOGAF Master Certified Architect status.
  • Experience in software development, technical leadership role helping deliver IaaS, SaaS, and PaaS solutions to tight deadlines and within budget.
  • In-depth knowledge of software architecture patterns, design principles and development methodologies; with a particular focus on the architecture and design of cloud-based solutions.
  • Strong understanding of business and commercial aspects related to software product development.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages.
  • In-depth knowledge of database design, data modelling and SQL.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and their services (Azure, AWS)
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to think creatively and propose innovative solutions Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies and tools.

  • Ability to drive continuous improvement across the applications CoE in relation to development, delivery and support of new and existing applications.
  • Strong desire for continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Deep understanding of how the Applications technology strategy will underpin the long-term business requirements.
