Medtronic is looking for a Principal System Engineer to join the Systems Engineering Team within the Surgical Operating Unit. This role will collaborate within the Surgical OU Research and Development organization and across the Medtronic enterprise to define an innovative new solution for intraoperative support.

A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  1. Identification of technical solutions that fit within the defined boundaries of our current technical constraints.
  2. Identification and documentation of enterprise level use-cases to inform potential business cases and product development strategies.
  3. Accountable for functional analyses, detailed trade-off studies to supplement product design decisions, requirements allocations at system and subsystem levels, and interface definition to translate stakeholder needs into requirements and product specifications.
  4. Performs technical planning, system integration, verification, and validation, evaluates alternatives including cost and risk, supportability, and analyses for product and system.
  5. Analyses are performed at all levels of product and system to include concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal.
  6. Identification of test methodology and authorization of test procedures to ensure system verification and design validation.
  7. < 25% travel may be required to EU & US.

Must Haves

  1. Bachelor's degree in Systems, Electrical, Biomedical, Aerospace, Chemical or Software Engineering.
  2. Minimum of 7 years relevant systems engineering experience, or an advanced degree with 5 years of relevant systems engineering experience.
  3. Systems Engineering subject matter expertise.
  4. Robust leadership and communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated expertise in new product development.
  6. Strong experience developing complex software or electromechanical medical devices.
  7. Excellent understanding of design controls and good documentation practices.
  8. Experience in applying regulatory standards to products (IEC 60601, 14971, 62366, 62304, ISO 13485 or aerospace equivalents).
  9. Willingness to be on-site (minimum 2 -3 days/week in London office).

Nice to Haves

  1. Experience with wireless communications systems, modern digital video protocols and multiple function device products.
  2. Demonstrated proficiency in requirements generation, flow down, allocation and management.
  3. Experience in applying system engineering processes methods in the concept, development, and test life cycle phases.
  4. Experience in requirements management, risk management, and system architecture development.
  5. Advanced knowledge of system-level hardware and software design and development, requirements definition, analysis, and risk mitigation.
  6. Experience working with multiple teams on concurrent, interdependent projects.
  7. Experience in Agile-scrum development within a regulated industry.
  8. Experience in design for reliability, manufacturability, and security.
