Psychology Assistant

North East England, United Kingdom NHS Full time
Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the innovative, multi-disciplinary teams based at HMP & YOI Low Newton, Durham and contributing to one of the DoH/MoJ projects within the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway - PIPE (Psychologically Informed Planned Environment).

The PIPE model is an innovative way of working with individuals providing a pathway for those who have either undertaken, or are in the process of undertaking, an intensive offending behaviour treatment programme. A proportion of these individuals will be, or have been deemed as high risk and present with complex criminogenic needs. The majority of these needs will have been addressed prior to their arrival on the PIPE unit, although some individuals will continue to be undertaking treatment or therapy as identified in their sentence plan.

PIPEs do not offer treatment, and are not treatment programmes. Instead they are designed to support and maintain developments achieved in other interventions. PIPEs are specifically designed environments, operating in Prisons and Probation Approved Premises, where staff members have additional training to help them develop an increased psychosocial understanding of their work. The approach enables staff to create an enhanced safe and supportive environment, which can facilitate the development of those who live there.

Main duties of the job

The role primarily comprises the delivery of psychosocial and educational groups to service users, offering individual support using techniques from non-governed therapy, delivering training to staff, and completion of audit and data collection as required. Opportunities to undertake service evaluation and research will also be offered and a desire to contribute to evidence based practice is desirable.

The post holder will hold a good first degree in psychology and will have an interest in research and practice in a forensic setting. Previous experience of working with individuals who have committed offences is desirable although not essential.

About us

The successful applicant will hold the position of Psychology Assistant and will join a team comprised of a Clinical Psychologist, a Psychology Assistant, and Prison Officers in helping to provide a psychologically informed service within a closed female prison, for a range of service users with a variety of complex mental health needs and offending behaviour histories.

We offer a wide range of professional development opportunities and training and encourage individuals to further develop their own clinical skills and experience. We also have a large research agenda and encourage individuals to pursue this.

We place a strong emphasis on professional and clinical supervision in order to support and develop individuals as part of our commitment in delivering the highest quality clinical service.
