Application Platforms Engineer
Location: London /Hybrid
Reporting to: Application Platforms Engineering Manager
The Application Platforms team plays a pivotal role in using c loud technologies to deliver the tools and platforms that support all Rightmove engineering teams.
The Application Platforms Engineer role covers everything from:
- how we build and test code;
- how, when and where it’s deployed;
- and how it’s monitored in production environments .
You will be part of a growing, self-motivated team and can expect to be part of some key projects:
- Defining, building and implementing improvements to our GCP platform and terraform codebase , supporting 150+ microservices, associated messaging and datastore services and other business services.
- Delivering end-to-end experiences across the entire delivery life cycle by evolving our custom-built tools & processes to support best-in-class engineering teams to deliver our products faster and more reliably.

A typical week as an Application Platforms Engineer might involve:
- Working collaboratively to drive the strategy and implementation for the above key projects in a meaningful and measurable way .
- Sharing design ideas that utilise new cloud technologies with the wider e ngineering team s , as well as leading individu al projects and mentoring team members .
- Regularly review existing systems and make recommendations on improvements in accordance with cloud best practices .
- Defining secure development and architectural practices that take into account the needs of all our delivery teams .
- Working across different GCP services and API’s to deliver reusable modular products .
We’re looking for someone who:
- Can (or is looking to) take a lead role in shaping & driving large-scale application platform projects .
- Help design, build, operate and optimise our G oogle C loud P latform , Terraform codebase and pipelines to enable us to scale the number of teams and services we have without a linear increase in operational overhead .
- Provide mentorship, training and guidance ensuring engineers adopt best practice for building and operating our cloud platforms .
- Be a key driver in the migration to and adoption of our new cloud platform .
- Drive the implementation of DevOps/SRE process and culture where site reliability and software delivery velocity are in harmony .
We are specifically looking for the following background:
- Experience of building out containerised application hosting platforms in a cloud environment (ideally GCP ) for Java and Node based applications .
- Deep hands-on technical experience in the design, build and operation of cloud platforms and infrastructure on GCP and or AWS for production workloads (ideally large-scale websites)
- Experience building containers (Docker) and operating orchestration solutions (Kubernetes) a nd / or ELK clusters .
- Experience developing infrastructure as code (IAC), building IAC code pipelines and automation, and can articulate and drive best practice across multiple m odularised repositories .
- Experience with traffic management/load balancing/service mesh software .
- Continuous delivery experience in an agile environment, such as scrum or kanban.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to work across a variety of other technologies including Kafka, Elasticsearch, Logstash, Oracle, Couchbase , Kong and Apigee , so any previous experience is welcome.
