The Department of International Public Health is seeking a Lecturer with expertise in global health, and/or any relevant field to work on research and teaching on forced displacement and refugee health. The successful candidate could come from different disciplinary areas e.g. epidemiology, health system, social sciences, development studies.

You will make significant contributions to designing, conducting and disseminating research on forced displacement and refugee health. The post holder will work within a global context and use multidisciplinary approaches in research. You will also contribute to teaching on masters’ programmes and supervising PhD and master’s students.

The successful candidate will have excellent research skills including research on health system and health system governance in humanitarian settings. In addition, the post holder will show analytic expertise, and communication skills, plus the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. You will join the Department of International Public Health (DIPH) that hosts a vibrant social science and applied health and systems research community that has innovative research and equitable partnership at its core, with ethos of co-creation of research, translation of knowledge into practice, mentoring, training and capacity strengthening.

Why LSTM?

DIPH hosts the Centre for Health Systems Strengthening (CHESS) which brings together social scientists and health systems researchers. We have particular strengths in health systems, community health, maternal and sexual and reproductive health, equity, fragility, urban health, chronic conditions, technologies and capacity strengthening. We have strengths in a range of methods including implementation research and community-based participatory research.

Over the past three years, LSTM has re-evaluated its diverse partnership portfolio and has developed a forward-looking strategy for sustainable, impactful, equitable partnerships, particularly in low- & middle-income countries, to deliver research, education, and knowledge exchange.

Key Responsibilities:

Research

  • Develop, deliver, lead and publish research, in the field of Forced Displacement and Refugee Health
  • Support the development of a research programme, planning and coordinating a broad research activity/sustain an extensive track record of highly rated published research findings and maintain an expert reputation in the specialist subject area to an international level
  • Contribute to collaborative research initiatives within the department, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to address complex health challenges
  • Work with academics in the department, across the institute, and global hubs in developing cutting-edge capacity for forced displacement research, enabling the development of new knowledge and understanding 
  • Assist in securing external research funding through grant applications and partnerships with international organizations, demonstrating a commitment to advancing research in the field
  • Assist in mentoring and supervising research students, guiding them in projects related to forced displacement and refugee health research
  • Publish research findings in reputable academic journals, develop other research uptake and communication products such as blogs, briefs, and present at conferences to enhance the LSTM research profile
  • Assist in formulating, communicating, and delivering a clear vision and strategy for the development of research in the field of Forced Displacement and refugee health that is internationally excellent, supporting the sustainability of the institution

Teaching and Learning Support

  • Assist in planning, developing, and delivering high-quality lectures, seminars, and workshops at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels
  • Contribute to designing and updating curriculum content and development of teaching methodology as applicable
  • Introduce students to cutting-edge research and its impact, delivering teaching to the quality standards expected of the institution's teaching programmes
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation and critical thinking
  • Collaboratively approve the quality standards of the institution's teaching programmes as applicable to own academic field
  • Supervise PhDs in the area of forced displacement and refugee health.

Service and Engagement

  • Cultivate partnerships with local and international organizations, governmental bodies, and NGOs to facilitate collaborative research projects and knowledge exchange
  • Contribute to the development and review of academic programs and curricula, ensuring alignment with the evolving landscape of forced migration and health research
  • Provide mentorship and support to junior faculty members and research associates

The successful candidate will need to have a PhD or equivalent experience gained in a field such as Epidemiology, Global Health, Forced Migration Studies (or a related field) and have extensive knowledge of subject area informed by substantial current research in the field. 

  • Evidence of established international reputation in an academic field
  • A strong publication record in reputable academic journals and presentations at conferences
  • Experience in successfully securing external research funding through grant applications or collaborations and ability to develop compelling grant proposals and manage research budgets effectively
  • Substantial experience in conducting independent and collaborative research in forced displacement and refugees health
  • Previous leadership and management experience, including the effective use of resources and budgetary responsibility and evidence of the capacity to assume further, major leadership roles within and outside the institution
  • Proven ability to provide effective guidance and support to students in their academic and research pursuits
  • Experience of developing and delivering lectures, seminars for postgraduate students
  • Experience of developing and delivering presentations at academic meetings and conferences
  • Experience of developing research uptake and communication products
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to network and negotiate at international level and communicate effectively and confidently both orally and in writing to achieve desired results of strategic significance
