The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit an MR physicist to join a team providing MR physics support for clinical and research MRI.


The Royal Marsden is a tertiary referral centre for cancer treatment and together with its academic partner, the Institute of Cancer Research, forms the largest comprehensive Cancer Centre in Europe. The three MRI Units of the Trust, based in Sutton (Surrey), Chelsea (London) and Cavendish Square (London), provide clinical services and host substantial programmes of internationally leading research supported by the NIHR Biomedical Research Facility, NIHR Clinical Research Facility, and other funding bodies. An extensive expansion/replacement programme is nearing completion, providing state-of-the-art systems with substantial opportunities for service development and synergies with research programmes. The recent formation of an AI imaging hub provides further opportunities for innovation. There is scope to appoint on a part time basis if appropriate.

The post holder will provide physics support for the Trust's clinical MR imaging service. In addition to the development of MR methods and techniques to support clinical and radiological service and research and translating basic research finding to clinical tools this will including staff training, MR safety policies, quality assurance procedures, first line trouble-shooting and maintenance of patient-critical clinical MR scanners and associated plant, development of MR measurements and analysis software for particular clinical applications and generating funding to support clinically applied scientific projects.
The post holder will be working within a multi-disciplinary team committed to excellence in patient care through the clinical applications of leading-edge science.
The post holder will need to liaise with radiographers, radiologists, clinicians, clinical scientists, clinical Research Fellows, Institute of Cancer Research staff (scientific, clinical and technical), manufacturer's engineers and scientific staff, Trust and Institute of Cancer Research workshop staff.

Plan and implement Quality Control and calibration programmes for the highly complex, patient-critical MRI systems. Contribute to an auditable programme of work to achieve optimum imaging performance relevant to current clinical service needs. Specify, perform and interpret routine QA procedures and advise on action required to address inadequate performance. Develop software to perform data analysis when necessary.
Contribute to the provision of safety and risk management advice for the Trusts clinical MR facilities within a clinical governance framework including interpretation and advice on the application of complex legislation, guidelines and standards. Participate in periodic internal audits to ensure that local rules are compliant with current international guidelines and relevant to current service requirements. Contribute to the periodic review of documentation associated with local rules. Assist with provision of routine training on these safety requirements for staff and visitors and routinely practice emergency procedures in the magnet and controlled area.

Education/Scientific Grades
Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in physical sciences or equivalent
Relevant PhD


Scientific/Technical/Specialist
IT experience including programming in one highlevel scientific language and data processing e.g. Matlab, Python


Some practical experience with Magnetic Resonance equipment, other imaging modalities and computer application
Clinical research Experience

Able to present scientific papers at national and international conferences
Able to provide training to groups of other professional staff
Able to deliver teaching and training on complex subjects
Able to use commercial software to analyse data, extract information, produce presentations and reports

Experience in computer programming
Understanding of computer systems and networking
