Ipswich Hospital at ESNEFT are looking for a Clinical Scientist in Radiotherapy. ESNEFT is one of the largest radiotherapy providers in the East of England, with treatments for over 3000 patients per annum delivered at the Ipswich and Colchester sites.

You will be expected to participate in a broad range of radiotherapy physics activities working closely with our multi-disciplinary team of physicists, engineers, radiographers and clinicians

Ipswich Hospital is equipped with 3 TrueBeam multi-modality linear accelerators routinely delivering VMAT, FFF and SABR techniques, with an Ethos linear accelerator with Hypersight imaging being commissioned ready for clinical use later this year

The department has a virtual Aria environment utilising the Varian cloud solution, and treatment plans are produced using the Eclipse treatment planning system. We have a Phillips Big Bore CT scanner with TumorLoc virtual simulation system and AI volume delineation. We have dedicated MR scanning slots for radiotherapy and will be expanding the use of MR within the radiotherapy pathway over the coming year. We work closely with nuclear medicine in order to deliver a molecular radiotherapy service

You should possess a good honours degree in physics with relevant postgraduate experience preferably including a higher degree. Ideally you will be state registered as a Clinical Scientist however if you will be eligible for registration within 12 months of taking the position you are encouraged to apply

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to participate in a broad range of radiotherapy physics activities including quality assurance of radiotherapy treatment equipment, treatment planning and providing assistance with computing throughout the department. They will work closely with colleagues within our multi-disciplinary team of physicists, engineers, radiographers and clinicians.

You will assist in the provision of the Radiotherapy Physics Service (external beam radiotherapy and molecular radiotherapy) at Ipswich Hospital under the overall responsibility of the Lead for Radiotherapy Physics and the Head of Radiation Services

You will also participate in research and development activity.

Essential


  • Masters degree in an area of Medical Physics or equivalent level of specialist knowledge
  • State registered Clinical Scientist

Desirable


  • PhD
  • Membership of relevant professional body

Knowledge and Experience

Essential


  • Proven significant post graduate experience in radiotherapy physics or successful completion of the Scientist Training Programme specialising in Radiotherapy Physics
  • Ability to act as an entitled Operator under IR(ME)R17 within the field of Radiotherapy
  • Routine treatment planning and quality assurance on radiotherapy equipment
  • Knowledge of clinical applications of radiotherapy
  • Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
  • Ability to prioritise and manage own work
  • Ability to exercise initiative when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence
  • Basic working understanding of all relevant legislation, standards, guidelines and safety principles relating to Radiotherapy

Desirable


  • IMRT / VMAT treatment planning and QA
  • Commissioning of radiotherapy equipment
  • Experience of Varian linacs, treatment planning system and ARIA oncology management system
  • Evidence of research and development activity
