Job Description

Mechanical Design Engineer - Bristol HQ (One short week based in Barrow Once a month) - MUST be a British national with no dual nationality or citizenship - up to £51k

A global Defence client with HQ’s around the U.K are looking to bring onboard either a Security cleared or willing to be security cleared Mechanical Engineer to join the team based either in Manchester, Bristol, Glasgow, Portsmouth, Barrow-in-Furness, Frimley or Weymouth. Although the base location for this opportunity will be mentioned above, the role is hybrid remote 5-6 times a month in the local HQ with periodic expensed travel to the project HQ in Barrow – approx. One short, blocked week per month.

You will be joining an Engineering Team that are made up of a team of multi-disciplinary Engineers and Data Scientists who estimate, collate and present mass properties data for a number of multi-billion-pound submarine programmes.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Collate mass property data for equipment and systems to deliver weight and centroid control on multi billion-pound submarine programmes
  • Support the Mass Properties Lead to aggregate weight and centroid reports and present the status to the Chief Naval Architect
  • Collaborate with system design engineers to accurate estimate mass, centroid and design maturity of multiple mechanical and electronic systems
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of parts mass properties
  • Provide input to and lead weight saving strategies and maintain the list of weight risk and opportunities for each discipline area
  • Interrogate CAD models to determine estimates for mass properties with associated uncertainties
  • Utilise statistical analysis to provide a whole boat picture of weight risk and opportunity to senior leaders, stakeholders and customers

Essential key skills:

  • Strong background in Mechanical Design
  • CAD - Siemens NX ideally
  • Ideally working in a safety critical environment (Aerospace/Nuclear ect)
  • Qualified in STEM subject (Ideally Mechanical Engineering)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • CEng/IEng status or a clear pathway to achieving professional recognition
  • Any experience with Data Analysis or Weights engineering would be an advantage but not essential for the role.
