Research Fellow

Penryn Cornwall, United Kingdom University of Exeter Full time

The above full-time post is available on a fixed-term basis from 01/07/2024 to 30/06/2025 in the Faculty.
We welcome applications from candidates interested in working part-time hours or job-sharing arrangements or those working remotely / hybrid.
The faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Research Fellow to participate in the project benchmark geological records for the response of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to near future temperatures (GEOICE).
The post is part of the NERC-funded GEOICE project that is combining ice sheet modelling with paleoclimate data from a recent IODP cruise to the Ross Sea to determine the extent and timing of West Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat during late Pleistocene interglacials. The central aim of the project is to determine whether the West Antarctic Ice Sheet contributed substantially to sea level rise during late Pleistocene interglacials under only moderately elevated (i.e. near future) global temperatures. The output from the ice sheet simulations will be integrated with sediment provenance data being produced by project co-investigators (based at Imperial College) using a sediment provenance routing algorithm that has already been developed. The research questions the project is seeking to answer are: 1) What magnitude of climate forcing is required for WAIS to collapse and did this occur during late Pleistocene interglacials and 2) if there was retreat, was it initiated from the Ross, Amundsen, or Weddell Sea sectors of West Antarctica.
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion for PDRA role) or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in ice sheet modelling / paleoclimatology / glaciology and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification (available on the university's website, accessed by the 'Apply' button) for full details of this role.
