The UK Director is ONE’s spokesperson in the UK and will lead ONE’s advocacy, policy, media and campaigning work in the UK. They will build and maintain high-level relationships both at political and official levels within Government, as well as within the wider UK community in support of ONE’s objectives. They will lead the UK team and line manage senior team members. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of the international development agenda, experience of lobbying the UK government on ONE’s issues and a demonstrable understanding of how creative campaigning, advocacy and media combine to deliver policy change.
The candidate will also possess strategic thinking, analytical, planning and communications skills; Lead ONE’s overall work in the UK, including overseeing all relevant components of the ONE’s campaigns as they pertain to the UK (media, campaigns etc as well as policy and advocacy), working closely with CEO, SLT and other colleagues across the organisation.
Identify and manage relationships with senior officials and other relevant senior-level stakeholders in support of ONE’s objectives.
Lead all policy & advocacy work for UK and work with colleagues, including members of the policy team, to ensure an effective policy and advocacy strategy for campaigns, including managing relationships with relevant external lobby and campaigning groups, preparing documents on specific development issues for a range of stakeholders, lobbying targets and audiences and crafting articles for blog posts, briefing documents and talking points
Support the team to/oversee the work of the policy team in policy and political analysis on UK development policy issues, and provide UK perspectives to ONE’s global policy discussions, ensuring global positions are compatible with the UK
Support the team to organise events as required to advance ONE’s UK policy and advocacy objectives, including in parliament, at UK Party Conferences, and other high-profile moments
Lead the UK team, including line management of senior team members. Serve as an inspiring leader and coach, manage performance, and help create a learning environment for the team ensuring team members have clear roles and responsibilities, and the resources to fulfill their objectives.
Be fiscally responsible for the development and management of the UK budget, ensuring the budget is in line with the strategic plan and used in line with established processes and policies.
Be responsible for resource allocation, including spending and hiring of staff in line with established processes and policies.
Act as the lead UK media spokesperson where required, including for national and international media outlets. Working together with ONE’s media teams, provide on or off-record briefings to journalists and other media actors.
Engage in ONE’s work across Europe to strengthen advocacy skills and MEL around advocacy, including by providing training, coaching and mentoring to more junior policy and advocacy staff.
Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience plus 5+ years’ in a management or lead capacity within international development, civil society, media or government
Experience of managing people and budgets, and directing team performance for maximum success
Extensive experience of designing and implementing effective lobbying strategies which achieve policy change
A commitment to ONE’s policy priorities and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work and of how policy change can be achieved through effective advocacy
Flexible and resourceful in approach
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills, sound judgement
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Fluency in English required. Proficiency in other languages such as French and German is a plus.
TRAVEL:
Travel up to 10%.
