As Civil Engineer you will work on a broad range of civil engineering and structural assets, from landside assets such as bridges and roadways, to marine assets such as piers, quays and breakwaters.

You will be part of a team responsible for acting as internal consultants to the rest of the Engineering department and the wider business, reviewing designs and specifications to ensure they are aligned to statutory and best practice approaches.

You will oversee a programme of condition inspections, reporting on inspection findings, and applying your critical judgement to plan an efficient programme of maintenance and repairs that push forward the Port’s sustainability agenda. By taking a keen interest in emerging design and construction methodologies, material technologies, and inspection techniques, you will drive innovation and efficiency.

You will prepare designs, work packages, specifications and drawings, for work to be carried out by contract, whether new construction, planned maintenance or reactive maintenance.

Duties of the post Holder

• To assisting in developing the Port’s civil and structural strategies, ensuring major works and interventions are programmed into the Port’s long term investment plans.

• To review technical designs and specifications, ensuring appropriate design assurance and follow through to implementation. In particular to review and check paving designs ensuring suitably aligned to the Port’s Paving strategy and best practice approaches, i.e. DMRB and MCHW. From time to time, some paving design may be required.

• To oversee a programme of condition inspections, collating and reporting on inspection findings, and applying critical judgement in order to plan an efficient and sustainable programme of maintenance and repairs.

• To provide technical assistance and/or advice on matters relating to civil engineering in respect of capital and maintenance works within the Port Environment.

• Take a keen interest in emerging design and construction methodologies, material technologies, and inspection techniques, assess their suitability for application within the Port estate, and champion their adoption where whole-life cost/benefit analysis supports their justification.

• To prepare design briefs, designs, work packages and contract documents, specifications, drawings, risk and environmental assessments for the execution of civil & structural engineering and other port related works which are to be carried out by contract, whether new construction, planned maintenance or reactive maintenance.

• To undertake assessments of existing civil and structural assets, review calculations and designs produced by consultants, in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.

• To work collaboratively with the wider Engineering team (including internal and framework partners) and external contractors, to ensure works are undertaken in line with current standards and best practice approaches.

• To act as Employer representative under a range of NEC3/4 suite of Contracts ensuring appropriate management of commercial, quality, technical, operational and H&S aspects of delivery.

• To act in the capacity of Principal Designer when appointed.

• To assess Contractors, Consultants and Suppliers against safety and quality competency criteria and make recommendations for appointment.

• To provide estimates and feasibility studies for proposed new schemes and alterations to existing, with assistance from the Contracts & Procurement Team.

• As required, to line manage one or more direct reports supporting the delivery and supervision of works.

Generic Duties

• Carry out duties with the Port’s values and behavioural standards in mind.

• Proactively liaise across all departments and functions to ensure clear communication throughout the organisation.

• Be an active member of a cross functional team, working as part of a matrix structure within the project environment.

• Champion the Port’s brand, being a positive ambassador for the company and our values.
