Job overview

An exciting, rare opportunity has arisen for a Matron for Children and Young People to Lead the team of nurses in our Paediatric Unit at St Peters Hospital. We are looking for a compassionate, dynamic, experienced, Paediatric Registered Nurse, who will be committed in promoting and nurturing a culture of Civility in the workplace.

The Matron for Paediatrics will be an integral member of the senior leadership team, responsible for the provision of high-quality care, the day-to-day operational management of the service, implementing the Trust's strategy alongside national, regional, and local drivers for improvement.

With transformational, coaching leadership skills and extensive Paediatric experience, the matron will provide professional, clinical, and managerial leadership across the Paediatric services, and work in collaboration with the MDT and the wider matron team.

Main duties of the job

· To have made an effective contribution to achieving the Trust’s vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes.

· To provide direct clinical leadership.

· To be responsible for clinical operational management and service delivery process e.g. within the clinical areas. This includes managing and monitoring resources within a defined budget and contributing to the corporate agenda.

· Within the framework of clinical governance, to lead and promote a quality service using research and evidence-based practice including the setting and monitoring of clinical standards.

· To monitor CQC, Nursing and Clinical Audits, Ward Quality

Audits and Ward Accreditation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will:

· Support the Divisional Chief Nurse to integrate corporate nursing plans and the nursing agenda in the Division focussing on quality and the patient experience. This will be facilitated by monitoring and delivering consistently high standards of clinical care.

· Deputise for the HON/DCN in their absence.

· Provide effective clinical leadership, expertise, advice and support to the clinical teams and ensure best practice and the provision of high-quality care to Children, Young People, their families and carers.

· Deliver safer staffing daily in designated areas within the post. Be a visible, accessible and professional collaborative leader and presence in clinical areas.

· Be accountable for the care delivery & management of the CYP Emergency department (ED) in the absence of the Paediatric ED Matron.

· Lead and promote consistent high practice standards aligning to NMC and Trust Policy.

· Be responsible and accountable for the Finance and Human Resources issues directly related to the ward /departments

· Be responsible and accountable for the implementation of Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives

· Promote and participate in the implementation of the ASPH Nursing & Midwifery strategy and Trust Vision

· Reduce harm, improve mortality rates and help prevent patient re-admissions.

· As the senior professional assure responsibility for the Quality of care and service delivery for the Departments.

· Monitor and complete regular checks promoting the requirements of CQC guidelines.

· Facilitate the induction, education and continuing professional development in conjunction with the unit/department managers of all nursing and support staff by liaising with the Clinical Practice Educator.

· Contribute to clinical governance, transformational change and improvement programmes leading on designated projects and tasks.

· Ensuring the establishment of staff is fit for purpose including leading the recruitment and retention of staff.

· Lead, support, develop and strengthen the role of the unit/department managers ensuring that recommended best practice and standards are adhered to and dashboard compliance is achieved and maintained.

· Accountable for the quality of care.

  • Level 3 Safeguarding Children
  • Assessing and mentoring qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of quality reviews/monitoring
  • Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints.
  • Significant relevant paediatric clinical and managerial experience in a senior position
  • Previous experience of change management and problem solving

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Up to date clinical skills excellent managerial, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Competent and confident in performance management and development of teams and individuals
  • Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints.
  • Able to problem solve and initiate change
