Inverness Highland, United Kingdom NHS National Services Scotland Full time

Come and join our growing gastroenterology team situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the country with views over the Moray Firth. Surrounded by the natural beauty, history and lifestyle opportunities of the Highlands, but well connected by road and rail and to major hubs by air, Inverness is Scotland’s fastest growing city. We are inviting applications for a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our existing multidisciplinary team.

NHS Highland has the only JAG accredited endoscopy unit in an acute site in Scotland, with the lowest endoscopy waiting times in Scotland. We serve a population of around 350,000, dispersed through 40% of the land area of Scotland. Our remote and rural geography informs the structure of our service.

This post is based in Inverness, using NHS Near Me/ Attend Anywhere virtual conversation (developed with patients in Highland), Teams-based MDT discussion and traditional face-to-face clinics in a network of rural and community hospitals to serve our communities. We are part of the North of Scotland Cancer Network, linking Highland, Grampian, Tayside and the Island health boards and actively take part in national audits and Scotland-wide initiatives such as the Scottish Autoimmune Liver Group and CfSD guideline working groups.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to training and supervision of doctors in training, specialist nurses and medical students. Gastroenterology and hepatology inpatient care and participation in the GI bleed rota is part of this role. Acute medical take is not expected to be part of this post but may be available for those who wish to do so. We are keen to accommodate specialist interests and dedicated research sessions may be available for suitable candidates.

There is immediate availability for a locum post, for which CCT in gastroenterology is not essential. Flexible working including less than full time can be negotiated, as can participation in the NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Programme, which aims to support NHS staff who wish to undertake overseas work in low or middle-income countries (LMIs). An initial fixed term post with the option for extension may also be considered.

Applicants are welcome to visit and we would strongly encourage those that are shortlisted to speak with the informal contacts and other relevant senior colleagues. You can ask for a Teams meeting to be set up through the department contact.

Interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
